Currently running a dull as ditchwater VW Passat TDI sport which is pretty quick, does 50mpg and costs nowt to run, but I hate it.

I need an estate for the hounds and will have 4.5k max after I get rid of the VW and have pretty much decided on a Legacy Estate, the jap import 280bhp manual version.

I'm aware the MPG is going to be half of the VW, at most, and the ins will be a bit more but are there any other major reasons why I shouldn't get one or are they pretty much bombproof??

18....eek....I'd expect that from the Auto but is the manual just as bad? I was expecting between 20-25.

The wife won't like that, will have to lie about that bit.

If this wasn't an Auto I'd be over there at the weekend...only in york as well....bloody bugger. http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/229219.htm

I assume the Legnum would be even worse on petrol due to being a bit heavier??
Lovely looking cars. Are they really that much of a financial liability or is it just cos they like a drink?
Also how do they compare to the Subaru?

Probably not far off at all. I had an E39 528 touring auto a few months back and that was reading 21-22mpg! My Mon-Fri driving is virtually all stop start at the mo.

I love e39's but they're not really that chuckable, much more wafty. I want something I can throw round corners a bit.

I've got one the rare Vr4 manuals.. There are a few about, usually that sort of money too.. i looked at the legacy but the Mitsubishi seemed better put together, much smoother and arguably better looking..

I get AVERAGE 21 mpg, mostly in London traffic too.. !!
I can live with that when the trade off is a properly quick car. The e39 wasn't "fast" or chuckable, but still cost a lot in petrol.

I've just been doing some reading and it seems like they're pretty solid but are very expensive if key items explode, such as the rear dif.....2.5k !!! That's a bit much.

I've put a request in to the seller of the car pictured above as to the possibility of getting one sourced from Japan. Manuals don't seem to exist over here at all.

Is your's an estate and what's your experience of it been like so far? Cheers

WRX Sportwagon is as chuckable as the 4dr version, and handles better due to the extra bulkhead at the rear = stiffer body. Only real performance difference is the 0-60 at .1sec slower although they have the same top end. Big enough to get your dog in the back and wife + 2 kids + gear, in relative comfort. Totally reliable!! smile

The legacy though is cavernous inside and for such a big car it handles extremely well, as well as being a good looker for an estate. All the reviews i have ever read about them speak very highly of them being such a capable machine in every way, however the only drawback to owning one seems to be....fuel economy....there is none hehe
Good point, been doing some proper looking and I think an Imp would be the way to go.

What power would this model year have?

Thats a 1998 UK spec. Looks nice

Could someone do me a favour a post a pic of the boot space or confirm I can fit 2 springer spaniels in the back.

Cheers.

Sod it. I'm gonna get a bit of a bank loan and go for a JDM spec STI Wagon.
Might as well get the one I want rather than the one I can afford. Saves changing it again in 6 momnths! Hopefully.

£8795 - JDM Spec Wagon - 2001

What's the concensus on that one. Is it too pricey or about right? Looks very nice and is no doubt pretty rapid with 300bhp on tap!
