OK, so I am about to take the plunge and move from a year old 996 C2 Cab to a new 535D sport in October (I know it's a world apart, but kids and all that...)

I know it should be good but what do you think - is the 530 as good as they say, is the 535d the one...am I making a mistake?

You won't be disappointed. The missus has a humble 320d and that is far from slow. Mid range the Elise 111S struggles to beat it. We have the 330d at work as Area Cars, and they are pretty rapid, even being automatic with light bars and a load of kit. I read the Autocar article on the new 3 series, which will also get the new 3.5L engine. With the torque it has the mid range is going to be stonking.

Work cars - so that's why my bloody tax is going up, so you lot can have fun whilst chasing people for doing 33 in a 30!

Calm down Mogul! There is only one 330d per station. I could count the number of FPNs issued by my area car drivers on one hand for a whole year. They spend most of their time rushing to violent domestics and burglaries in progress. When they do chase people, it is usually the drunk, the disqualified, the wanted or people using cars in crime.
I can assure you, doling out FPNs all day is left to that executive acency of the Inland Revenue, or "Safety Camera Partnership" as they prefer to be known.

I don't have a problem with the plod having 330's - I've got a 911 and that's much faster!

Why use such a car to go and sort out domestics...what's wrong with a good old fashioned Panda car?

And why is it when I call the cops to tell them that my neighbours house is being burgled they don't want to know?

Seem to be writing my own replies today!

I went to the local BMW dealer and had a good look over a new 530 (petrol). Having bought Autocar or whatever it's called this morning, reading a great report on the 530d, I was really getting excited about seeing a 5 series in the flesh.

Well...it just didn't do it for me. I think the exterior is OK, but the interior is dull and boring.

I still intend to drive the 530d and see if that changes my mind, but now I don't know what to do.

I also have a 6 month old GT TDI 150 golf (not the new shape) and that is a great car so I am completely confused. Should I even bother changing at all?

Mogul,

there are loads of different combinations of interior to choose from, don't be put off by some idot speccing a car wrong or ugly...

The 530d is blistering... the 535d promises to be mind blowing.. However it will be a few more quid..

For our roads the 530 is more than enough... just depends on how much of a petrol/diesel head your are

Dieselheads.

Large petrolhead - hence the 996 and 150 TD GTi Golf!

Not sure what to do...

I'll sleep on it.

Mogul,

I can't see any way that you will be disappointed with the new 535d. With it's twin turbo 3.0 litre diesel it whips up 272bhp and a whopping 413lb/ft of torque. All this from a factory spec engine! I would imagine that reputable BMW tunners will extract more! Probably well over 300bhp and 500+lb/ft of torque!!! Bye bye Mr 911.

Stevie.

Nice lovely or quick lovely?

Unfortunately I have been let down by the local BMW garage and they have sold the car (530d) I was due to test for a couple of days. One concern is that I'll get bored with it really quickly. Yes you can tune it etc., but a friend had an 2001 M5 and sold it within 3 months because it just didn't do it for him. It was a very fast saloon, and that summed it up - a very fast saloon...

Also all the cars I have seen so far (albeit not to my spec) have been pretty boring inside and if I'm going to have to live with this for a couple of years I want to get it right and not think, why oh why etc. etc.

Don't know how quick it will be as still running in....but bags of torque and so smooth.....as to whether you will get bored with it?

Its obviously a completly different car to a 996 Cab.......i had a 996 C2 and in some ways prefer the BM....horses for courses.

Mogul,

I have a new 525d Touring with lots of extras on it (4 weeks old now). In terms of interior colour I would highly recommend the beige leather with the Black Maple wood which looks really excellent (the black and grey interiors do look boring and change the feel of the car inside). The Logic 7 sound system is excellent (I love my music) and is getting close to the performance of my Bose sound system in my AMG. The Sat Nav is great (we call her Mable) - it is "only" the Business version with the arrows but is first class. Would also recommend the rear window blinds for the kids plus Xenons.

I also have the run-flat 18 inch wheels which do cause some minor vibration during the early miles (less obvious now). The performance of the 525d is also excellent (and also currently getting 35 mpg) and therefore the 535d should be something very special.

Overall it feels an excellent package and if you can afford a number of the options then it should keep you amused probably throughout the life of this new model.

Hope this helps !

Do you have any pictures you could post of the interior?

I intend to have at least the following:

Professional Sat Nav (no TV - got that already and never use it!)
Zenons
Multi CD
Electric memory leather sports seats
Sports stearing wheel
18" 7 spoke alloys
Heated seats + S/Wheel
Bluetooth
Full automatic climate control
Head up display

And had thought of metalic black + beige interior

Thoughts?
