BMW extended warranty cost
Discussion
My 2010 X5 35d M Sport approved used warranty expires at the end of the month. My X5 has 24000 on the clock. The extended warranty price is £121 a month or just over £1300 for the year. Is it me, or is this just very expensive? I think a Porsche warranty is cheaper (for a used Porsche of course!).
I realise there are options; a voluntary excess and breakdown cover, and the price I have been quoted is zero XS, but still! This vindicates my decision to replace the X5 with a brand new SUV from another manufacturer which means I actually save money compared with keeping the X5 and taking the warranty. Just need to get a decent price for the X5.

If you are only doing that type of mileage, then IMHO you don't need a warranty - just put the £1300 + savings of using a Indy specialist into something that returns 3%.
If you really want the peace of mind, buy a 3 year warranty from warrantywise etc - it will cover all mechanics and electricals with options on the a/c, media etc. it should be about £1800 once you have negotiated them down:-), checked the Indy specialist only box, taken off the roadside recovery ...
With my two high milers, I have only ever broken even on a eom warranty, but it does mean my costs over 10 years are more or less fixed with little or no chance of big cost repairs sending my cars to scrap heap in the sky :thumbup;

I guess you've got to take that as an indication of how much BMW expects it to wrong, and how expensive it will be to fix.TBH if I knew figures like that in advance, it would put me off buying the car.

Exactly this. If I had known the cost I wouldn't have bothered when I bought last year, or at least would have negotiated two years warranty as part of the deal.TBH if I knew figures like that in advance, it would put me off buying the car.
Looks like I will have 4-6 weeks with no warranty from 1 sept, whilst I wait for the Disco to arrive.
I was toying with the idea of an E92 M3 but the extended warranty cost put me right off. I don't want that kind out outlay in case something breaks, but if the manufacturer thinks such a high price is necessary to protect themselves then that speaks volumes about their confidence in their own product.

I think that's a reasonable point but I don't think BMW are significantly more expensive, or more or less reliable, than any of the other so called 'premium' manufacturers. It just seems the way things are these days; cars built to a price, everything made to be cheap and light and just do it's job.mudy said:
I'm in the same boat and I haven't even picked the car up yet - 2010 x5 35d that comes from the dealer with 1 year warranty but thought I'd check so dialled in my details into mondial and it quoted £1,600!
Oh dear
Negotiate a 2nd year AUC warranty as part of your deal - even if you have to pay it should be about £500 so saving you £1k plus and has better coverage.Oh dear

I was asked for £120 a month for my 645. I let it lapse.
As said that amount could be spent towards a new car with warranty included.
I wonder if that comes into BMWs (I know the warranty is Mondial, but BMW must be able to influence the cost) thinking when the set the pricing? As said that amount could be spent towards a new car with warranty included.
After all, what they really want is people buying new cars on 3yr PCPs - so they make it that by the time you add up the warranty, servicing/maint and on-going depreciation, you might as well take a new PCP.
Mercedes used to have a brilliant package called ServicePlus, which covered all servicing, maintenance and repairs for 6yrs/120K miles. It was about the same cost as Mercedes extended warranty and while you had it there was no point in changing the car. They knocked it on the head about 3yrs ago.

It's a good idea, but I think it's down to likely cost to the warranty company. I've bought a couple of these (one for a 1 Series, one for an R56 Cooper S) and the came in around the £300 mark with a £250 excess; when I tried to do the man maths I had to keep the cars After all, what they really want is people buying new cars on 3yr PCPs - so they make it that by the time you add up the warranty, servicing/maint and on-going depreciation, you might as well take a new PCP.

It's not difficult to end up with a big bill from a garage in this day and age.
I don't believe BMW are able to influence the costs of these policies.
As stated, they're provided by Mondial and underwritten by its parentco, which has nothing to do with BMW. At the end of the day, Mondial is a commercial enterprise which is forced to operate on a stand-alone, commercial basis to BMW and has an entirely different / independent regulatory framework from anything BMW will be able to influence.
Also, I'd be surprised if even man-maths could cancel out the 1.3k cost of an annual warranty over the depreciation involved in buying a new X5 (whether on lease or PCP)!

That is crazy cheap - I have no idea why there is such a massive discrepancy
It's the car you're buying, that price is competitive against similar cars in the class.Ranger 6 said:
AFAIK That's about right for the class of car. A Cayenne is £1200 and a D4 is close.
My X3 is £530 for the year with full European Breakdown included. So I obviously have a lower class car Gassing Station | BMW General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
