Also 730d engine should be sturdy enough as its been around ages.

Getting 30mpg+ as opposed to maybe 18mpg will mean you'll save significantly at the pumps from day one. Plus neither a 750i nor a 730i would be cheaper to buy so there is no other cost saving there to offset the fuel. Also come resale time with a 730d you've a sporting chance of getting a home for it.Would have been tempted with getting a petrol....

You telling me a 730d is going to be the same price as the 730i
a 2003 730d with around 90k on the clock is going to cost in the region of 10.5k looking around autotrader as a very rough guide.
a 2003 735i with 90k on the clock is going to cost around 8k. These figues are a very rough generalisation but you get the idea.
You can pick up 23 ish mpg compared to the diesel which will be around 33 mark. ( again i will stress the figures above are extremely rough but lets assume 2.5k is the rough difference) Lets say the op does 15k a year.
730d = £2064.34 a year
735i = £2606.10 a year
£600 difference
So to make that initial 2.5k difference worth it he will have to wait around 4 years to make it worth it. Assuming there arent any extra running costs due to turbos going etc.
35i will also provide an extra 60 odd bhp I think. And I imagine it will be alot quieter
Wow actually looking at it I could get a 740li 55k 2003 for around 10k , 730 equiv is £13-14k

Yup. I dont think you can compare relatively high mileage older petrol cars from at best a small time trader or at worst a private sale with no warranty with what the o/p has bought ie, a AUC 2006 car. 2006 7 series petrol prices are there or there abouts with 2006 diesel car prices from a main dealer, which is the ONLY way to buy them in my opinion.a 2003 730d with around 90k on the clock is going to cost in the region of 10.5k looking around autotrader as a very rough guide.

As prices are actually similar for 2006 cars, then over that timeframe the O/P will SAVE £2400 over the petrol variant, and thats not including the fact that in four years time he will be more popular if he had AIDS turning up on a dealers forecourt with a 6yo big engined petrol dinosaur.730d = £2064.34 a year

You can imagine all you like. I would believe in real world driving the d will be no less quiet than the i. Check out Clarksons review of the 535d against the 540i. - a car less well insulated that the 7 series.I also think the torque advantage of the d will offset the BHP difference in the real world.

Cheapest on Autotrader is from Big Motoring World - that horrifying dealer that is commented on here regularly and keeps starship mileage ex auction cars - at £14700. Oh, and they didnt list the mileage.
Or is that 750i your mate saw in passing at an auction a couple of weeks ago and told you about it last night purely by chance. Or did you read about it somewhere on the internet, so it must be true?
The o/p bought his 730d from a BMW dealer at two years old. Can you therefore compare like with like and show me the equivalent 730i / 750i in the dealer network?

So for example, hypothetically of course, if you drove a 3 series, i take it would be a 330i, given how much you're preaching to the o/p and the rest of us about the merits of large engined petrol BMW's.
Can you confirm thats the case for us?
