Anyways - if you had said 'Ive a 330d and its caused me endless pain due to reliability issues, therefore consider a petrol one' then fair enough, but you had to be johnny-big-balls and come up with alternatives that you yourself havent done. Personally if i felt as strongly as you say you do about petrols i'd be running a 330i / 325i / 320i / 318i (dependant on mileage that you do) but then its a lot easier to criticise other peoples choice of car than actually validate your own opinions by living by them.
Can you please make sure you reply to the right people. I don't have a 330d and have not offered any advice about buying a petrol 7 Series in this thread.

I do, however, feel strongly about running a petrol BMW. So guess what. I do.

Tourag. This is after all your thread sir. Do you know what Tourag means btw - and no cheating?
from my Ph understanding it means "I couldn't afford a Cayenne"

other then that no idea!
Now Now Play NICE

Its something to do with no mads, or is that spelled nomads. You know those people who wander round [the desert] with no home. You can go ahead and google it now and tell me I'm wrong.
Know you have told me I did knmow that, somewhere in the darkest recess of my mind.

I cant see mine doing much desert roaming though, but it may make it to the beaches in northern france a few times next year.

Alternative viewpoint:

Man chooses car, slightly unsure of his choice so posts on the internet. Man gets various opinions, changes his mind, still unsure so opts for something totally different. Man now gets uppity when the second choice is queried... Why bother posting if you don't want a discussion?
Did you read the first post of this thread, or just jump in at the last.
From the beginning - hence clearly reading 'Any advise [sic] very welcome'. Or didn't you mean that? rolleyes

I thought the 730d you nearly bought looked a steal. Should have stuck with it rather than being put off by other BMW owners... wink

had a '99 7 series and the engine went pop at 100k.
That's surprising - they're only usually just run in at 100k. What happened?

I'm surprised too. They should be good for a long while after that if correctly maintained.

It had Nikasil issues. Maintenance had nothing to do with it unfortunately.

I think I remember talking with you about this before and me saying it was a bit odd as no '99 models were effected by the nikasil issue. If it was a 740i and a '99 model it would have been the M62 engine which used alusil not nikasil unlike the M60 engine that was phased out for that very reason in 96 (just from memory).

We did discuss this before. My car was a Germany spec car, which continued with the Nikasil lining when the UK and US spec cars went to Alusil linings.

Right, its pretty hard to work out why a german spec car would have the M60 engine in it a few years after most other countries switched to the M62. The M62 engines were produced in germany after all and were never manufactured using nikasil in the engine blocks.

I'm just going on what the garage told me initially, and then explained after I approached them withthe "nikasil engines finished before mine was built" quote.

If I'm wrong it is water well under the bridge so I dont really care any more.

Curious

How did it go pop?

Ran rough as a badgers arse and smoked badly?

It sounded like a spanner was being knocked against the cylinder walls, which got worse as the revs rose.
