So did I. I'd not bother spending the money until you get a problem worth taking it to a gearbox specialist for.

I had very slight occasional jerks. I still did after the fluid change.

The fluid has to be at a certain temperature whilst refilling which is the crucial bit.

When filled the gearbox adaptions need resetting, nothing to do with throttle adaptions or how the gearbox 'learns' your driving, it's the actual adaptions for the solenoid pressures etc.

I had a slight jerky change 1-2 now and then, had 2 fluid changes (to properly flush it) and it wasn't until I reset the adaptions that I never felt it again.

Seems reasonable assuming they're using genuine parts.

All they do day in day out is automatic gearboxes so they must know what they're doing.

Genuine ZF kit is approx £200-240. Add labour. Job is easy (I am a qualified BMW Technician, still straightforward if you take your time).

Yeah I'm sure too, but I'd not be able to sleep at night knowing they've fitted pattern parts!

I'd be asking the question, I'm sure others aren't bothered.

Just had a quick look at this one. Looked to me to have had a poor repair to the OSF wing at some stage. Even in the poor light it was fairly noticeable. Towing eye missing still. Grey on grey not as nice in the flesh as it sounds wink

Lowered Suspension News

I've had my Bilstein B12 kit fitted now for just over a year. Once the fronts settled the rear always looked a bit high. This was probably made worse by having a higher profile rear tyre. Anyway I've finally had this lowered now by my trusted BMW mechanic who has tweaked the air suspension settings. He thinks its come down by almost an inch. Pics to follow when I get it back. I've decided to get him to do the gearbox oil change.

So I can definitely tell a difference in the before and after of the gearbox oil service. Or this is what I am telling myself. No clunks or jerks since. I wouldn't say the box shifts smoother or anything as it was always very smooth - ignoring the occasional jerks which had started recently. What is noticeable is that now at a steady say 31 mph the car will shift into a high gear and the revs stay very low say around 1200. This is nice as it makes me think the car is using the torque of the engine and keeping mpg down by using a higher gear. The only other difference which is perhaps more obvious is in sport mode. The car feels much more lively. It is quick to shift down if I give it a good prod on the throttle and when using full throttle it seems to rev up and then change quicker and cleaner. Before there was more noticeable lingering at high revs where I would be thinking change change change. Now it seems to reach a snarly growl at the top of the revs and then change nicely just at the right time. I never used sport mode before but now i like it.

I suspect that every effect you report above is a result of the reset of adaptations rather than the change of fluid. You can get too paranoid about these things; I wish I'd not bothered to do anything until I got the red transmission failsafe mode warning on the dash. Even then, after turning it off and on again no fault codes were stored and it drove fine.

My old car! Loved it (owner for over 3 years) - and would not hesitate in buying it back, had the timing been slightly different (ie had I not just bought an alternative third car)! The combination of the Logic 7, comfort seats, panoramic roof and v8 was sublime... Such great cars - as the majority of people reading this already know of course!
