sorry I didn't phrase this very well.. emphasis on the 'currently'! this was meant to read "every bmw/mini is supplied with 2 keys currently"
i didn't mean older cars.

I have just had my black BMW 335d - YH11 HJD stolen from my drive way this morning. I am one hundred percent it was locked cause I drove home, took out my golf clubs and checked it was locked. Went to be 12am last night and woke this morning to go to work only to find the car is gone. Having read through this thread and others I am amazed how BMW aren't doing anything about this.

Feel quite sick about this. Not sure I want another BMW even when the insurance pays out.
FFS. I feel for you, that's terrible. Any idea how they initially gained entry to the car? Any signs of glass?

Sorry to hear that mate, same happened to me last week. Are you in London, where abouts? Worth posting details on the STOLEN wiki in general gassing.

+1 your comment on not wanting another BMW. I'm in theory getting mine back as police found it via tracker, def wouldn't have bought another and depending on where I end up financially I might sell it pretty quick and trade back down to a 5k banger.

Not to my knowledge and my OH is a multiple Mini owner and seriously connected with BMW Minis. Not a whisper from the contacts. So I doubt it.

I think the BMW cars being nicked are the pricey ones that the thieves have a route out on abroad. That is what is making the worthwhile for the unprincipled slimy evil faggots who pinch these. mad

Google News said:
London, Apr 16 (ANI): Emmanuel Adebayor was left furious on Sunday after his brand new 60,000 pound BMW X6 was stolen.

The 28-year-old footballer fears he fell victim to thieves using a gadget meant only for BMW technicians.

His flash motor vanished from outside his penthouse in north London's swanky Hampstead.

"They did not have the key - the keys were in here," the Sun quoted him as saying.

A BMW source also commented on the incident.

"Adebayor couldn't believe it," the source said.

"He kept asking how it was even possible - and even joked if it was the work of an Arsenal supporter," the source said.

The laptop-style fault-diagnostics machine is usually kept at dealerships.

"Someone from BMW will be investigating," the spokesman for the car maker said. (ANI)

Thank you, never thought it would happen to me but what a smack in the face. No signs of forced entry, both the keys are with me...if the car was picked up it would have made a lot of noise which definitely would have woken me up. Quite clear that somehow they gained entry into the car and started it with a laptop or whatever technology they had with them. I have raised the issue with the Sytner dealer I bought the car from and to be fair they were quite supportive. I called BMW and told them off issue, they said they would get a manager call me back and give me the escalation process. I feel this will do no good but if enough people raise it then you never know.

Interesting that a high profile footballer had same thing happen to him at same time as me...shows BMWs are targeted and they have found a way to easily steal them.

What should I do, not buy another BMW for fear it wlll go just like the last one. Fun that this was my first Beemer and it may be my last.

BMW diagnostics can't do it, it'll be one of the CAS readers.

It's odd that they say it was a BMW laptop despite the fact they didn't catch them so they don't know what it was.

I have been awaiting this reply with interest. I said a while ago I thought this was a computer based problem whereby the increased dependence on PC technology has significantly increased the vulnerability of BMW cars.

If you read this post and the one immediately next to it about the laptop being used to gain entry to the footballers X5 BMW I think the conclusion is inevitable. The weakness is in the IT element of these cars whatever OS they are using.

These cars will become uninsurable if this goes on. Completely uninsurable in cities.

May I once again reiterate my concerns for the owners. I have had several cars stolen and it is absolutely gutting. I hope the Police catch the barstards and they rot in hell. Unfortunately neither is probable.

Exactly, they said it was a laptop from BMW so that it hides the problem once again. If they had said "widely available tools from ebay", everyone would panic.

The fact that they reported it as a BMW laptop means people will think it's corruption at one of the dealers of theft of sensitive equipment, of course it was neither.

Let us hope the theft from a high profile figure like Emmanuel Adebayor will get BMW moving as I can only see very expensive insurance premiums unless something is done pretty quick.

Good post. It is exactly as I suspected, an error by BMW making interference in the electronic systems of the cars all too easy. Just as my garage man predicted about 20 years ago. Clever man he spends virtually all his time teaching other auto electricians to be proficient in auto electrics now. Essential with modern cars. As this topic clearly show. Never met another like him in 40 years.

He still runs two MOT/Rolling Road garages. The queue outside his garages are so big at weekends a Hamburgers etc van offers breakfast to all concerned. Good businesses. Probably the most genuine and honest car trade man I have ever met. I wish there were more!!

I would expect another bland denial and thanks for raising the issue which will be investigated.

BMW will not admit this until they have to. #

I given the detail and losses shown in this PH blog and the Footballers recent loss which is very high profile and contains much of the detail of the problem, BMW are going to have to come clean shortly. But not until they absolutely have to.

Do they have a solution. I doubt it. Denial is the easiest way to disguise the truth.

If the 19" alloy wheel cracking situation is anything to go by they will deny for as long as they possibly can.

I do indeed, he is one of my oldest friends in business and a long tern client until I retired. I do not intend to advertise his services, but you have to admit anyone who has the brains to foresee this development, when BMW have not, and quietly predict it in conversations years ago, is an most unusual motor mechanic.

He has no need of my recommendation he turns work away regularly in the area he operates in everyone knows of his scrupulous honesty and the business just booms away. You could cheerfully recommend Colin to a maiden aunt or a new 18 year old female car owner. Both would be treated with scrupulous honesty. It is the way of the man himself.

I had a diesel Audi A4 in various companies for over 15 years from new maintained by Colin. 585,000 miles on the original engine, never missed a beat, when I sold it and it is still going strong.

Unsurprisingly he needs no recommendation from me. Delightful, clever man.
