Get in the car , close the door, ensure all doors are closed.
Turn on ignition but do not start the car.
Press & hold the trip meter reset button for approx 10 seconds, until 1st service item is displayed in display between your speedo and tacho.

Thanks for this, just need to finish front offside in morning, quick bleed, and then all ready to reset. btw found the original sensor from front (I don't throw anything away, a bad habit that comes in useful sometimes) and used original which was on the rear at motor factors this morning to get exact match, also picked up the correct rear discs which were Pagid rather than Textar.Turn on ignition but do not start the car.

all physical works completed.
Sat in car to do reset and after pressing the trip button for 10 seconds got a code up thats when the method described didn't work as planned, scrolling the up down on the indicator stalk did nothing but pressing the trip button did scroll thro some codes (with every individual press of the trip button) one of which was the build datum showing 14/07/10.
Any ideas?

Took the car for a short road test and new brakes bedding in fine.

I have used this method but I don't have my notes to hand. Subject to checking, you may have held the button too long and went into the next function.Locknut: this did cross my mind but the codes I get up are the only thing that come up after 10 seconds, before that its simply the mileage and trip display other than the warning triangle came up after about three seconds but when i take my finger off the trip reset this goes out.
Last time the brakes were changed (front) when the dash warning came on and this was pretty simply to reset.
I have read on other threads where people have shorted the sensor to make the dash warning display (brake warning and lift) and then reset this.
A trip to BMW looks the likely solution as the kind folk there set a 600 mile service display (at my last general service) when they told me the brake discs were due for renewal (despite never having had the wheels off to measure the disc thickness!).

It seems from step 3 that you may have over-shot the runway!
This description uses the left stalk on the steering column. I believe it can be done using the i-drive knob but I have not tried it yet.

Discs Rear Pagid (these are the deeper discs 76mm rather than 66mm)
All pads Textar
Sensors, one front, one rear, both Pagid (Straight not right angle)
All parts sourced via EuroCarParts
Final job - handbrake to be adjusted
