Anyone know what to do next after cutting key open, replacing battery, re-syncing key and it still not locking key?
It unlocks car and boot, after doing re-sync (pos1, remove hold down unlock and press lock 3 times then locking goes through a cycle, then ign on to finalise) - still can't make it lock car but obviously button works for confirmation of resync to happen!
Is it because I'm not syncing a second key??

Can you not just paint them with etching primer and then either matt or satin black?Great choice of car. Have had a 540i Touring for 5 yrs now with sport/M5 front and is one of the best cars I have ever had, now 184k miles and very little goes wrong. (Famous last words!)
Bought a 645CI last October to replace it but has been parked up in garage ever since as just love the the comfort, performance and load capacity of the E39 Touring!

Q. in this wintry weather does the aux fan come on when you guys with e39's switch on your aircon?
Mine doesnt (although it is 1c today) and as a result the screen mists up on recirc, checked all the fuses and they are fine, checked the aux fan plug internals - looks clean, spun the fan and it isnt obstructed.
The internetz tells me that the aircon pump wont engage unless the aux fan is working..
Had codes read today, only the pre-tensioner showed up so dont think theres any problems
some people on the internetz saying air con system start below 4 or 5c - is that the truth?

The aux fan only runs when the AC compressor pressure reaches a certain level or when the coolant temperature reaches a certain trigger point. The AC will also not function in low ambient temperatures - so at 1c it's not working, by design unfortunately.
UPDATE:
It was all going well until I decided to tackle the leaking rocker cover gasket. Stripped everything off only to find the gasket was stuck to the head all the way around with sealant. Spent an hour and a half getting the sealant off the head without it all going inside the engine.
Upon inspection of the cam cover, a major problem showed up, it had come apart in 2 places and further inspection of the head revealed the broken bits in the oil wells. Carefully extracted those bits, but the rocker cover is toast. No one in the UK has one (well there is one but that's broken as well it turns out) and BMW want £303 for one !!! Eventually tracked one down in Germany so will have to wait a couple of weeks for that to arrive.
Decided to do oil breathers instead whilst awaiting parts, BMW sent me the wrong hose for the ccv to dip tube so bad to wait an extra day. Whilst I checked the hoses I found the oil dip tube CCv return connection was blocked so had to remove the dip tube and clean it all out. Replaced the two hoses that were clogged and broken, blew the valve through and its all clear now.
Wife helped me tow the car back out of the garage (with the 100% reliable LOLvo) to the street last night. It's currently sat on the road with a u/s engine and it looks like the parts might turn up after I leave for a 3 week tour of SE Asia and Ocenia (incl. melbourne f1 ), back for a week then off to the Middle East for a week which means the car won't be running until I have some time in April.
Why is it with BMW everything that can go wrong does go wrong?
Ps the engineer that thought up that dipstick tube to oil separator return line and channel to sump needs to go back to school, it's waaaay to thin for re-condensed oil to pass through without clogging over time.

I wouldn't say anything you have mentioned is unusual for a BMW of it's vintage. Like any older car, parts will wear out. Just replace those parts! BMW dealers aren't the cheapest route or really necessary. Check out C3BMW on the web, they don't stock rubbish and have a great reputation. The parts are mostly oem without the BMW stamp adding unnecessary £££s. Will try that guy for parts.

CCV system to be falling apart
Diptube to be blocked
Cam cover seal to leak (probably because of the two aforementioned things)
Intake hose to split at the idle stabiliser union bellows
Cam cover to disintegrate whilst fixing the leak
Power steering fluid bottle to leak
Worth checking the dip tube isnt blocked if you have an e39 petrol as that seems to be the start of my problems with the cam cover and its a pretty easy fix.
I have the vanos seals here - but actually I am going to leave those alone for now as undoubtedly one job will lead to several more!
Anyway, when the cam cover arrives it should be better than before so I'm looking forward to driving it when the weathers warmer - just hope the air con still works.....
