Never thought I'd find myself saying this but I actually.... LIKE this car!!

Whilst I appreciate BM's as good drivers, I've never thought much of them in the style stakes (mainly because of the image of the people who drive them admittedly!) but I have to say that this isn't a bad effort at all IMHO. I think the rear lights remind me of the new Lexus GS more than anything else (present facelifted 7-series excepted); I don't mind the length of the boot either.

Seeing this new model in profile when compared with the current coupe (as shown on the other thread) makes me feel that BMW hasn't changed the proportions of the car too drastically, and I completely agree with those who've said it looks better than the current sallon. Methinks a facelift (bumlift?) for the saloon is not too far away...

And to all those who think it's crap - your opinion is valid I suppose so say what you will but at the end of the day you can't argue with sales stats!!!!!

Aside from the slightly dopey front spoiler area, I think it looks fantastic. Such a relief that it's much nicer than the sedan.

Minging. What is with the enormous rear overhang?

If you look at the earlier thread (www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=262726&f=72&h=0) there is a shot of the old and new in the same profile and the rear overhang on the new car is actually LESS than the old one. I think the viewing angles can be very confusing.

Finally, the 2.5-litre engine uses an electrically-powered water pump. This not only eliminates the engine power normally needed to drive a conventional crankshaft driven unit...

Eh? Where does it get the pump get its power from then, solar panels? Or maybe another car following close behind with an extension lead between the two?

Removes the rotational inertia of the two pulleys, associated tensioner pulleys, bearings and belt thats required

The 335 engine power is a bit disappointing. 3.5 litres with turbo's should be knocking out 400hp and even at that, 115hp/litre isnt very highly stressed.

I like it overall. Front end would have to grow on me to own one though.

It's not 3.5 litrees. It's 3. BMW has always had a habit of marking up the model designation of turbos to what it thinks the equivalent n/a engine would be in displacement.

Well it looks like this car is going to replace the last good looking car (current 3 series) BMW make. Bangle's quest to cock-up BMW's styling is complete. Having had 3 current style coupes, I shall not be partaking any further with their products.

the first was the 2 door 3 series, definately not a coupe.

So disappointed. I've seen spy shots from a few angles that have had me foaming at the mouth. Rumours of how it will take the basic shape of the saloons and embellish with some of BMW's more aggressive styling cues. But this is a big disappointment. Very fat and heavy appearance from the front that it looks like they've tried to lighten at the rear. IMHO, if you look at the car in two halves it looks like the front from a much bigger car welded to the rear of a smaller one.

Thinking about early press shots of the Cayman and how misleading they were to the car we see now, I hope the same is true here!

I thought exactly the same when I looked at it last night.

It was always down to the rake of the back window rather than the number of doors. Remember the Rover P5? It came in saloon and coupe guise, but both had 4 doors.

as above its the rake of the rear window, plus the e30 was sold as a 2 or 4 door.

you wouldnt call a 4 door golf a hatch and a 2 door a coupe after all.
