Its a modern BMW handbrake, therefore its shit.
So say the man with an old 5 series whilst waiting patiently for the e60 to drop in price so he can say the same thing in 10 years time.
Nowt wrong with the E28, E34 and E39's Handbrake! wink

The E34's handbrake is excellent, the E46's is appalling!

We're on our 11th and 12th BMWs at the moment and have never had problems with their handbrakes. The cars are allways main dealer serviced and the brake is occassionally applied whilst driving as per the manual. Also the autos we've had have allways had the parking brake applied when the car is stopped.

The only car I had a parking brake problem on was a Ford Scorpio with ventilated rear discs. The handbrake was applied when I stopped but as the discs cooled down the pads let go and the car ran away. Apparently it was a common problem.

Difficult to say at the momment. Both current cars are either new or AUC and both still under warranty, so no repair costs. The last 330d we had was blessed with a five fully inclusive service and maintenance pack. My 320d cost around £600 for servicing in 50,000 miles with all repairs covered by warranty. As for current car servicing the 120d is due an oil change in 4,500 miles about £170 and the 335d (a bit more &#163wink in about 10,000 miles. The 335d will be a year old in March but probably wont want a service until maybe August next. The 120d does more mileage and is 14 months old but yet to be serviced.

From a business point of view, I find them very cheap to run, I had a Nissan Primera that was costing £1,200 per year to service.

Chris

Ok so your only ever running them for up to 5 years & in all honesty not much should go wrong, I wonder if anyone has experiance with cars older than this BM's of course.

99 T E46 328i SE, 0-126K miles: clutch, rad, water pump, thermostat, 3 sets of control arms. Plus the usual consumables of oil, tyres, pads, discs and belts. Not all that bad, all things considered.

So this explains the addition of a seperate 'overcomplicated' handbrake drum then...

Well I've had my car fixed and they charged me £50 plus VAT for cleaning, lubricating and adjusting the handbrake. It has passed the MOT but is still not very good as far as handbrakes go. Annoyingly though I have discovered a large dent in the top of the bootlid that I 100% know was done while the BMW dealer had it but I am unable to prove. In addition, they have not sorted out the creaking window seals. I think I should just vote with my feet on this one because they are obviously incompetent and not to be trusted.
