As an everyday work tool it is fantastic, just not the sort of engine to get you soul stirring. Which is why a 130i may be a better choice, but with fuel getting so pricey is it really worth it?
For every penny unleaded increases in price, diesel increases by more than a penny. Of course its worth it.

I drove my 530i Sport to Worcester on Monday - and average 39mpg from Exeter to Worcester by travelling at 70mph indicated. I then drove it down to Southampton with less concern for economy and this dropped the average to 35.7 but even so - with fuel economy figures like that from a proper inline six petrol engine in a large, heavy car, why pay 15p a litre more to stick smelly fuel into a noisy minicab?

don't get me wrong, I'm no diesel lover but the 320d or 520d are no noisey mini-cabs

also, as the OP is a company car driver (like me) the d versions makes way too much financial sense to ignore

Funny you should say that. One of my (many) potential future car strategies is to let my wife run the 520d company car and get a 130i for myself...best of both worlds?

It has been tuned, to around 210bhp and the thing never fails to impress
how do you get around that with a company car btw?

I'd love to do the same but would worry about the insurance and the dealer picking up at service time

I have a spider tuning box, plugs in in under 2 minutes and gives really impressive results. They are £350 but they will do them for £300 delivered to forum users.

I have been asked if I would use my 320d to test the new OBD port tuning that is now available for the 177bhp X20d engines, so I may let my box go for around £250 in a couple of weeks. But I would want to make sure the remap was at least as good as the box as at the moment I am thrilled with the results.

when you say plug in in 2 mins...is that 2 mins for an accountant (me) or 2 mins for a someone who knows what they are doing?

I have a 320D M-Sport Coupé that looks just tremendous in white and I'm delighted with it. It's quiet when I need it to be, handles beautifully, eats miles and pulled a completely stable and stress free near 150mph on the autobahn. It also revs like a petrol engine.

I'm sure the 5 series is just as accomplished - the decision comes down to how large a car you need.

haha, no that is proper 2 minutes.

You pull the cover up and towards you, then unplug the connector on the commonrail and plug the box in, plug the connector into the spare plug on the box, put the cover on and you are away.

I may know of one for sale if you are interested, £250. Let me know if it is of any interest.
