Jees...this isn't as simple as I thought, but learning lots from the replies - some serious knowledge knocking around and great mixed in with a bit of banter of course argue

Although I think the e36 318iS top speed was actually claimed to be around 130mph, but that was based more on gearing - it pulled around 20/21mph per 1000rpm in top, and with peak power coming in at around 6,500rpm, that pretty much adds up.

Not sure about the gearing but it may be that Porsche understate the top speed, as the previous version did over 170 round the Millbrook banking.

Please provide evidence to back up your "facts" as without that they are not facts at all.

Same circuit, same driver, properly timed, I suggest the sport auto times for the 'ring...

7:50 BMW M3 CSL 360 PS/1421 kg Horst von Saurma Sport Auto 08/03
8:22 BMW M3 E46 343 PS/1584 kg Horst von Saurma Sport Auto 12/00
8:26 BMW 335i E92 Coupe 306 PS Horst von Saurma Sport Auto 306 hp

That shows that the e46 M3 is quicker, and don't start banging on about tuned versions or we'll have to mention the 7:22 by a tuned e46 wink

No doubt that the e9x chassis has moved the game on though, that can be seen in the M3, much stiffer base to start from so has huge potential, just not delivered in the 335.

It is driven gently, we have a 15 week old child in it most times (well this week, obviously sh was 14 weeks old last week and 13 the week before that, but you get the idea). If you nail it you get much less than that and if you get stuck in traffic it'll hit low teens or single figures. It'll do more than 30 on a run if you are careful though. Think it has about 5 or 6k miles on it now (will check tomorrow) and it is rumoured they get better as the get older...

Well I picked it up on Sat and first drive to work today..absolutely love it and though never considered an auto before (psychologically thinking just gone 32 was far too young to be geting lazy with an auto shift) but as 80% driving is pootling in traffic, not sure i'd want to go back....impressd how it holds the gear when accelerating then backing off etc, though early days, so no doubt my driving style might change.

Only managed 19mpg today (car done 4.5k) though was doing 31+ mpg on mway back from dealer....but cant resist giving it some boost to get that lovely sound. Just need to work out the 'i system thing' and maybe choose a re-map (looking for one that can be turned on/off and/or not traced for warranty reasons of course)then I'll be made up and waiting for the summer to get the roof down.

That is one example. The ring.

Also unless there set on the same day with little traffic, comparing ring times is pointless.

DXB335d - You are unable to verify your wild claim and so far two people have provided suitable evidence to disproof your claim. May I suggest that until you're in a position to supply readers with something tangible that you...please...step away from the keyboard? Because you personally, are doing a better job of devaluing the BMW brand than Chris Bangle or the current state of the economy ever did!

They are set on a closed circuit so no traffic. Next.

What about this lot - does this help?

Track 335i Coupe M3 (E46)
Hockenheim Short 1:17.8 1:16.3
Laguna Seca 1:49.038 1:41.915
Autozeitung test track 1:45.8 1:44.5

Have a good christmas, hopefully you'll unwrap a sense of perspective and perhaps Santa will give you a grasp on reality too wink

The problem is, he may have been quicker around a track (or heard of someone who has) than the E46 - once. That was probably driven by someone who didnt know what they were doing. Therefore - the diesel is faster and can claim the top spot in DXB world. FACT.
