Trouble is finding them. Since posting, I've had a trawl around Auto trader. Everyone of the cars I want seems way more expensive than whats being mentioned here as being book. Wildly so.

In short, I want an older shape 5 (prefer the shape) in a solid colour, 4 litres or above, auto, with leather and satnav/tv and as full a service history as possible and definately below 90k. I've had leggy stuff in the past thats spat silly things that haven't been to much grief to fix, bit still strand you on an Italian motorway at 4am. And I can't be arsed with that.

I'm not finding any of the above below £7000 though frown
I have a dark blue 1997 540iAuto with 84K on the clock, but a new engine from BMW at around 41K. Full service history and no sat nav (sat navs tend to age badly anyway). There are some stonechips on the bonnet, and a deep scratch on the front spoiler bit courtesy of a high kerb last year. I am letting mine go for about £2K, the only problem is that my sister wants itsmile

Just thought I would let you have a price comparison, as that car you are talking about is unlikely to be worth more than £4500 or so.

Thanks Chris, I appreciate that. Can't wait to get home and get hunting - but I get the feeling I'm going to be st out of luck.

Regardless of what they are 'really' worth, neither private sellers or traders are letting stock go for that money.

I paid 18,000 quid for my old 530i Sport, and am seriously thinking about getting another at current prices. Ace cars.

Well, having said that - there are 2002/2003 745i's out there with fsh and really good condition with 90-120k miles for £7K...... arguably much more car for same money. I am not sure I buy into the E39 140k mile club who think their cars are classics...but hey.....who knows...I just know if I can get a 745i 2-3 years newer than a 540 of similar miles for the same price then I know where my money is going.
