SOLUTION NOW AVAILABLE.
There was an announcement made to our dealership this afternoon that re-programming is now available for ALL models from 2005 onwards.
It is a 20 minute programming job that all main dealers will have the software for. The programming is also completely free of charge regardless of age. It adds a new layer to the encryption that is unaccessable to anyone except a BMW dealer.
It has been announced that work will be carried out ONLY when requested by customers, so don't expect your local dealer to be on the phone to you on Monday morning (unless you have already contact BMW customer services, at which point you are already on a "to contact" list).
Spread the word.
I have a 2005 330i - I called the BMW Customer Services line and they have no record of this and continue to give me the line that there is no need on pre-'07 vehicles. There was an announcement made to our dealership this afternoon that re-programming is now available for ALL models from 2005 onwards.

Has anyone had any success booking in their pre-'07 cars following this new news?

I can't say for sure if the update will work on an 05, but it's something I aim to try in the next few weeks.

Interesting that this update is only available in UK. I asked my dealer in Slovakia and also in Austria and they both claimed there's no software update or anything.
Just ask them for the SOPT update. You might have to pay, but it secures the car. You won't need to do anything if its had its software updated in the last year. LukeSi said:
Quick question, will the fix effect a Remap at all?
Not according to Mr Bimmers link above. It's not really an updated file, it's just disabling the window dropping feature via the door key. The remap shouldn't be touched as far as I can make out as it wouldn't be stored in the CAS Module. t8cmf said:

Cooper BMW left me a voicemail today asking me to call back to book in my 57 plate E93 for the "security update".
I'll let you know how it goes.
I was in today. Interested to see the job sheet I signed to book in said "... Watchdog". I'll let you know how it goes.
Done in a couple of hours and collected, nice chat on car related stuff and LM with service advisor.

My 2006 e91 is booked for Saturday.
Paid for yourself or free ?Some scumbag tried to steal my 06 E91 a few months ago (smashed side window, opened OBD port etc).
My wife's X1 is booked in for the "update" but when I asked whether an update was available for mine, they went away and checked with the workshop and categorically said there is no update for pre 07 models. I said I'd be willing to pay if necessary, but they stated there is no update released for my model.
There also seems to be some confusion about what the update (sorry "enhancement" as BMW keep calling it) will fix. The dealer that my wife's car's going into tells me the only thing it addresses is the window drop issue when using the key in the driver door.
I decided to test this on my 06 E91, and guess what, using the key will drop the windows, so surely mine is affected.
The service guy I spoke to did say that BMW may decide to release an update for earlier cars, but I was the first person who'd asked the question as to whether the update was available for a pre 07 car.

As above. I believe this is the only thing the 'enhancement' updates. My good friend works at a dealership as a technician and has told me the same.
