I know the M5 V10 suffers the same problems. A friend of mine had 3 M5's in 4 months. All failed catastrophically! - and he now drives an RS6.
Er...oh f@ck!The problem is what (genuine 200mph+ sporting GT) to replace it with, in theory?
Let's say a ceiling of £60k.
Bentley CGT - nice but as involving?
F550 - great but not as quick nor practical.
996tt - absolutely but, er, nope, you got me!
RS6 - fabulous but I drove loads and ultimately it wasn't quite as intense (then again you could have one of these and pretty much your EVO of choice.)
I suspect only the upcoming RS6 will be viable.
Schnell uber alles.
If only BMW developped an engine as reliable as the M30.It span over decades with nothing like the catastrophies asssociated with the current V10 I read about here.Maybe keeping things simple would be the solution for the future.Less is more.Look at the E30 M3 as an example, what a good allrounder, and why depart from such a good combination (chassis/engine) and get so obssessive with power.. more power..etc.
Market forces, sadly. The V10 appeared because it was being used in F1 and the concept sounds very exciting to a keen customer. BMW also knew that Porsche and Lamborghini had engines under development and wanted the jump on them.
You can't really sell a flagship high performance car on the basis that "we've kept it simple" unless you're Lotus.
The problem is the balance between build cost and complexity. On the one hand, you build to a budget and cannot over-engineer in the way that the old M3 or the V12 was but you are under pressure to make it as high tech and high powered as possible to beat the competition.
The new V10 is the first configuration to appear in an 'M' car that has no derivations used in another lesser model. I'll be interested to see if we ever see a 750, for example, with a detuned V10 instead of the current V12.

I suspect the 6 series in general was released too early and BMW let the owners test the systems and find the faults
What do you think of the 650i ? Has it fixed 645i defects ? Must get over to the bargain barge threads, far closer to what I am willing to pay Edited by Talkwrench on Monday 29th October 10:48

Er...oh f@ck!Now if Talkwrench could try and finish the rebuild and tweaking on my 850 before V.max in 10 days I'd be ever so grateful

I want it completed just as much as you do but I'm not going to be pressured into taking shortcuts anywhere.
Just remember, I planned on taking a year to do this car before you showed an interest in buying it!
Good things come to those who wait - and impatient people just get a slap... or is that just children....
And remember, Im a man - so when I get nagged about something I subconsciously slow down
Al, get your not insuibstantial wallet out and explain to Von Talkwrench the benefits of Bora Bora, servants called Yum Yam and the recouperative qualities of hammock based lubractive goo products.
There's every need for this 850 of yours and there are many who really cannot wait until the new year to witness it's being.
There's a good chap...

On the downside, all of our jobs are soon to be no more, as the powers that be decided it would be a marvellous idea to shut the whole agency down and give the work to a top notch London agency ... and apparently it won't cost them a penny more
On the flip side, me being a bit of a dodderer and part of the fixtures and fittings, I get a brown envelope of reassuring proportions ... henceforth i find myself looking at the Ferrari classifieds sooner than I might otherwise have done ... so in short ... if I don't get this 850 pretty soon then I could inadvertantly find myself in even more bother with the wife than I would ideally wish for!
And I thought it was only me that could possibly take a year to prepare a car
I'm fortunate in that I'm currently doing a car for someone else and he actually WANTS me to take as long as possible! Completion for him will only mean that he then has to reduce his collection of other cars to re-accommodate it. However, I will in due course be able to help him with that conundrum as well
My wife, however, doesn't share his enthusiasm for inertia and inactivity! The rusting and decaying M535i that is serving (in my mind at least) the dual functions of donor car and modern sculpture in our garden isn't universally appreciated as a piece of post-modern art... which it clearly is!

Actually, the original Lachs Silber paintwork seems to be developing it's own natural Verdigris whilst the car is parked under a Yew tree in the garden...perhaps I could accelerate the process by spraying it with a solution containing natural live yoghurt?! That's supposed to work isn't it?

Thanks 8 - I appreciate your opinion. However, not exactly balanced is it? The 630 does 0-60 in under 6.5s so it's no slouch - what's your gripe? The looks are a personal thing - ok, it's no italian but it manages a presence lacking in it's competitors. The reliability is a big issue though - with so much reliance on electronics it could be a write off waiting to happen. BMW warranty required methinks.
Anyway. How cheap is this!?! http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/BMW+...
I would really like to see a 2 tonne car do 0-60 in 6.5 with a 3 litre in it. Whats the 0-60 on a 130i with half the weight? Also, take a look at some of the 6-Series forums and they are complaint after complaint. BMW North America have been forced to take back many, many cars under their "Lemon Law", many being replaced by 650's or refunds. I cannot remember any other car in BMW history with that record. Please also remember, most reading and responding to this are 6-Series owners and enthusiasts, the unhappy and downright angry owners/ex-owners are not here to voice their experiences. I am a BMW technician so I see them all! Thats why I say, look at 6-Series forums for an un-biased view.Anyway. How cheap is this!?! http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/BMW+...

Not seen any of these yet but the engine is good in the other cars so it would really be 6 related issues to contend with and I believe most of these gripes are now pretty much dealt with.
I like the diesels although I personally would not have one. I feel it loses the excitement of the drive. I almost visualise a big coupe with sporty underpinnings and a diesel as somewhat of a hybrid! Like an M3 with an auto box.
It does have the looks of one breed and the economy of the other though.
Good luck in your choice.
Any childish comments from the trolls to follow now? 15 year old 5 series owners?
