535D Holding gears when cold.

Hi, on my 645ci i've noticed this. Every day I jump in, go round the block and it revs all the way up to about 2800-3000rpm before 2nd gear kicks in.
But a couple of months ago this was so bad that my fuel consumption was around 9mpg, around London. I asked for BMW Heathrow to reset the gearbox software. Now averaging 19 or so........
It reminds me of how the E46 used to be: after a while I would keep my foot on the brake (or was it throttle - can't remember) whilst i turned the key to ignition 2 for 20 seconds or so. This was meant to reset the auto learning....
Any thoughts.......?
