It’s the old dilemma.
We know what we should have, we know we don’t need all those horses, we know financially it is an extravagance...... etc.
Modern cars are just so good.

I have a 140i as a daily - nearly 45,000 miles since March 17... great car - nuts when you want it to be (very quick, but needs to be driven with care - not a VAG 4x4 numb sterile fast everywhere whatever the conditions) and very efficient and docile when driven on motorway, busy roads... Long term 32mpg (low 20s if having fun and high 30s early 40s on steady long journey), managed 48.6mpg yesterday coming down M1 over 70 odd miles...

Doing an 8 mile commute each way in traffic, currently about 19/20 mpg, but have had 45 on a long run.

Can get 22/23 if I think about it but cant be bothered.

Its a good all rounder I like it but I dont love it, if I had to sell it I dont think I would be all that fussed, weirdly I was fonder of my grotty old TT 225 I had before even though it was an utter shed. It goes like stink but it seems overkill, though I did put a tuning box on it, well why not for £175 ?

The auto is great but like any auto, its crap compared to driving a manual when you are in the mood but wonderful when you cant be bothered.

Will give it until I am fifty in a couple of years then change if for something a bit more interesting, it just seems a bit aloof, doesnt have much personality somehow, I do think a lot of it is it being an auto though.

I think I can understand and agree with all those statements ! Different people, different opinions, but I think it is a car that can give one person different opinions on different days!

I complete agree with your comments, quick, competent but feels a bit soulless sometimes. My old highly modified Impreza I felt the most connected too.

Btw, what tuning box have you got and where did you get it from if you don’t mind me asking?

Yeah, some days I am more enamoured with this than others, it does most things very well but it just feels a bit lacking in some personality, after giving it some I dont get out and feel like patting it, sounds daft but some cars make me feel like that.

I think the main thing is it being an auto, the interior is nice enough but feels cold and not very welcoming.

I love how it looks, never got the hatred, I think they look good even though its about as distinctive as any other of the million One series out there.

Like I say, need to pay for it in full and will get a Mustang or something next, got to get the youngest finished at uni then can indulge that a bit more, £1400 quid on accommodation, trips and sundries this month, jesus.

I love the mustang, if only it had this engine..... the 2.3 turbo is going to pop gaskets for fun, the 5.0 will just pop wallets!
I can just about afford a mustang second hand but I don’t want either engine frown

Where do people get this rubbish from? Have you heard of any mustang head gaskets going? No, because they had the correct gasket installed.

The focae RS are all sorted now too again because the correct gaskets have now been installed.

Ok so it does appear the mustang does have same engine with different coolant passages in the head/block....

Maybe I can consider a stang after all

Manufacturers all go through engine problems at some stage. I had a Triumph Stag with overheating problems, they all did.
Porsche have had their fair share.
Ford will sort it.
Prices always find a level. The BMW 140 for example

Correct

It’s fair to say nobody wants headgasket failure let alone 2 or 3 times in one ownership.

The 2.3 ecoboost was renowned for head gasket / engine failure hence I ruled out RS & mustang as a potential .... plus I don’t really want a 2.3 turbo mustang .... the bema engine has a more suited soundrack to a muscle car than the 2.3 does

I would love an RS, I see, now I look more recently that ford say they had some confusion with head gaskets but I would want to know for sure that it was sorted incase mine cracked a block or head out of warranty privately owned paid with cash etc etc

I’ve heard of m135is eating their serpentine belts and it wrapping around the crank inside the crankcase but it’s not bothering me enough to stop me buying one because it’s not everywhere you look when searching for reviews on these cars .... when searching for info on the focus RS you get endless articles on the engine / gasket failures. And trust me I am a ford & bmw fan so I’m not being negative towards the ford

The stag had a terrible design of head where the bolts are trying to clamp the head to the block at an angle rather than the bolt shank being 90degrees to the head like Most engines are

You just have to use google and look up new and recent info rather than get obsessed with old problems from 2 years ago that have now been dealt with under warranty.

As suggested, every marque has its issues but manufacturers try to rectify this and move on as Ford has.

Prices dropping? A low mile 2 year old car is still £27k which means it has done amazingly well in regards to depreciation and only lost maybe £3k per year, certainly much better than the m140i has so far or any of its peers.

Back on topic, the m140i has certainly grown on me somewhat but still looks gawky and the seats still look too plain for a performance car.

I have to say I agree regarding the seats, the looks are growing on me now but the seats..... why couldn’t they have made them look a little less cheap and cheerful.... I guess they need to be fairly slim profile because the 1series is quite tight for room inside (used to own a 130i and the seats in that were nicer)

It is plain. I find the seats good though in my short term ownership. The electric lumbar and side support make them snug and with the heating on it’s pleasant. Our RS 4 Avant which we have had for 11 years has great looking seats but they have to be climbed out of and tubby folk can’t have a lift!
There’s some great cars made. The Civic Type R, Golf R, Focus RS and so on. This Is just a sober, smart car to me, but it does go!

I've had an M140i Shadow Edition 5 door in grey since Sept '17 or about 16,500 miles now.

For me it's a great car, really smooth automatic gear box and reasonable economy, totally unstressed engine with about 1,600rpm at 70 in 8th gear.

Oh and in the right conditions on the right road it goes like absolute stink if you want it to.
