I traded in the 640i and collect a new to me M4 next week. Cannot wait! Just need to find some insurance now, the quotes so far are eye watering. It’s like being 18 again

I'm after some advice - I need to order new belts for the alternator and air con for my E39, I see that GSF have Gates and ECP have Dayco at similar costs, is one considered better than the other or should I go genuine?
I’d say Gates as well but that’s because that’s what I’ve fitted before.
Thaks chaps

Wasted my time and gave my Z4 a quick wash last night before changing the rear discs and pads.

Funnily enough whilst we're having this conversation - and a week after I had the front right ABS Sensor replaced, I've had the usual Xmas lights on the dash to say another one has gone. Plugged in Carly to see which one, hoping it was a duff sensor fitted on the front, sadly not it's the left rear one that's gone.

Car drives absolutely fine other than the warning lights and no hill hold, but as we're going on holiday on Sunday and need it to get to the airport the wife is less than impressed. Hoping it's just the sensor and the ring doesn't need redoing again....
Have you tried the spacer trick if you’re chewing through sensors? Might buy you a bit of time.
I think that's what I'm going to do for now- the garage I'm booked into next Weds really aren't keen on replacing the reluctor rings and basically said there's a chance they'd knacker the driveshafts getting them out at which point I have a 3.0 straight-6 paperweight... that way at least I can get the car back on the road (which is quite necessary as I'm meant to be moving house within the next month) and either find someone to sort my existing driveshafts, or source some GKN/Lobro/Spidan replacements- which seem to be the only ones that actually match the OEM shafts, but are priced accordingly and also not easy to source.

The 125i does share driveshafts with the 128i/328i which are seemingly dime a dozen in the states (being the base models over there) so getting some replacements from that side of the pond may be a possibility...

Looks like I'll be able to tell you about the driveshaft supply situation, as my guy has reported that my left rear one is knackered. Already been repaired once and sounds like it's too far gone to do again, and has ripped the top off the ABS Sensor.

He's also mentioned that my locking wheel adapter has basically worn out from the amount it's been used, so that needs attention too.

Lovely bill coming my way next week when I get back from holiday then. I shall console myself with the view of San Antonio harbour in the meantime...

That’s a pisser. Are there any decent used driveshafts that will take the sting out of the bill?

Sounds like the drive shafts are going to cause a fair few owners some headaches.

Balls- sorry to hear that. I thought I'd cracked it with the idea of sourcing some from the States (where the mechanically identical 128i/328i are incredibly common), but even looking for 'half-shafts' that side of the pond hasn't really resulted in much success, and amazingly many of them are the same thinner 4-pot driveshafts I've been trying to avoid despite those cars never being sold there.

This one should be correct- the corresponding right-hand one has the correct image showing the thicker driveshaft, and it's from GKN who are the OE supplier. There's some website in Norway I found (Trodo I think?) who also had them but over £200 a side...

I think there's going to be a lot of 125i/128i/328i owners taking a punt on 120d driveshafts in the future.

Don't think secondhand will be an option sadly - there aren't too many 125is out there in the UK and from the sounds of things they are all suffering with the same issue....

Haven't had a call yet to say my guy can't source anything, so I'll update when I get back - he normally gives me the part number of what he's fitted so will let you know!

I'd ditch those ceramic pads asap.
Gone through 2 full sets of ATE discs & ceramic pads, both sets of discs wrecked.
Each time the car was parked for a week on and the discs were slightly rusted over.
The pads aren't abrasive enough to clear the discs fully seemingly, both times shortly after I've experienced symptoms of discs being badly warped.

Symptoms gone when i've replaced the brakes.

ATE ceramic pads work superbly; with ATE blanks or Powerdiscs

Never had any issues with mine and ran them on 3 E39s with zero issues

Haven't fitted them to my F31 as they weren't available when I was doing the brake overhaul

It sounds, unfortunately; like you had bad luck as otherwise they're well reviewed discs & pads and rarely receive negative feedback

Discs don't warp (unless they're crap from factory); that's pad deposits or you've other suspension issues

I’ve run them for a while on my previous 335i and my wife’s old 125i and can’t fault them to be honest but neither of our cars ever sit for that long.

Today I continued puzzling over something that happened on Friday night.

I was checking tyre pressures on my E91 325i before driving from London to France on Saturday morning. Using my (normally) trusty Ring inflator, I went round all 4 tyres and it wouldn’t inflate any of them, so I assumed it was broken.

Went to the local Esso and tried the machine there. When I pressed the inflator nozzle onto the valve to inflate, all I got was air coming back out. Same on all 4 tyres. Assumed the machine was broken. (Yes, I had put a quid in.)

Tried the local BP and the exact same happened. Then I started worrying that KwikFit (which replaced my rears a few weeks ago) had somehow buggered all 4 valves.

It was 10pm by then, and our ferry was booked for 7am, so I had no choice but to call the AA. The guy arrived around midnight and had no trouble inflating all 4 tyres with a “proper” inflator, and clearly thought I was an idiot. As did I.

He then drove with me to the local Esso and offered to show me how to use the machine “properly”…and the exact same thing happened to him - the air blew straight back out of all 4 of my tyres. Which made me feel less stupid.

But I find it hard to believe that my Ring inflator and machines at two different garages had all packed up suddenly. Especially given I saw someone at the BP garage having no problem using the machine on their tyres.

And ideas? I’m baffled…

Stuck valve cores? Did you try pushing the core in to release a little air first? I have to do this sometimes on my MTB tyres.

This; happened on my TPMS as well... I've one of the little core screwdrivers from years back. Just used that to loosen them & retighten them; zero issues now

Thanks both. Are you talking about the cores or the pins? I pushed each of the pins in and out a few times to see if it helped, but it didn’t. I’m also still wondering how all 4 valves suddenly stopped working (unless it was indeed KwikFit breaking them all)

I wish it were bad luck but twice in a row says otherwise with ate ceramic pads with matching ate blank rotors. Won't ever purchase another set.
I've had arms and worn bushings replaced.
About to order a third set of ATE blanks with matching ate regular brake pads in 12 months.
Car gets driven about 500 motorway miles/week so its not like im particularly hard on them.

The pin / core of the valve... You can get replacement sets; like this for an example:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lanjue-Repair-Schrader-Re...

It could be that they've all been damaged by someone too heavy handed etc

About to go and pick it up from having a two stage machine polish and ceramic coating applied. Will post some pictures later. Then the wheels getting a refurb and new centre caps and hopefully that'll be it for a good while.

Very happy with the results, no swirl marks or minor scratches to be seen anymore. Lets see what happens when it rains and at the first wash.

Ahead of preparing the F11 for selling, I booked it in for the following recall jobs at my local BMW dealer just outside of Edinburgh (Newbridge).

10011090700 - Replacing the exhaust gas recirculation cooler (high temperature)
10011350700 - Exhaust gas recirculation cooler customer notification
10013490300 - Program control units (DDE)

I had actually dropped the car off Sunday afternoon so they could crack on with it early doors Monday and not have to wait for the car to cool down. I was on nights anyway but woke to a message at 3pm saying the car was ready and had it back before 5pm. Interestingly, when I had a call from the service technician this morning they asked if I was happy with them washing and hoovering the car (I was) which, given all I've read in the past about dealers ignoring requests not to, was a surprise to me. When I collected the car there was also a nice little pack containing OEM replacement wipers, air freshener and one of those 1L oil top up bottles in a BMW case, another pleasant surprise.
