Stealer Service Quote
Discussion
So my E91 320d is nearly due for it's first service under my ownership. I decided to give my local BMW dealer a chance and asked them for an itemised quote. This is what I received:
Engine oil service labour 32.49
Oil filter 17.28
Oil 5.5 ltrs 0w30 Shell Helix Ultra 82.23
Service standard scope 21.66
Microfilter service labour 10.83
Microfilter/Activated Carbon Container 36.52
Pollen filter housing cleaner 75ml 6.67
Total 207.68
+ VAT 41.55
249.23
Talk about bending you over and pulling your trousers down! £249.23 for what is basically and oil and pollen filter change. It is safe to say I will not be using the stealers for servicing...

Thats pretty typical price though. My A6 always cost about that much and I am about to have the Evora done plus brake fluid and that comes in at £320, brake fluid change adds about £80Engine oil service labour 32.49

I'm looking at that thinking it doesn't look bad , once you take into account the cost of the oil and filters , the cost of them actually doing it seems only a bit cheeky
.....and they're giving you the stamp that still counts for something if you need a goodwill claim and helps convince a potential buyer that you aren't scrimping or hiding something

Ta for that link.Engine service £386
Brake fluid £51
That's £437 + a flaming scope charge at £19.80
Do I really need the BMW £59 Vehicle check?
There is a light on the dash for this. The car has only 10K on the clock.
Overall still works out cheaper than I was quoted.

Quite interested in the responses here! Is it really the general consensus that £250 for an oil and pollen filter change is reasonable?
I own a caterham as a 3rd car and do all servicing and work on that myself. I have also serviced DIY serviced my wife's cars in the past. Therefore I have a fair idea of the work and effort involved and personally just can't stomach £250 for what is a very straight forward and simple task.

Your quote only has £50 of labour in it, I would pay that everyday to save the hassle of getting under the car, draining oil, disposing of oil, fiddling about with clips or filter hpuisings etc and not getting a service stamp.I own a caterham as a 3rd car and do all servicing and work on that myself. TBH its a no brainer.
As above, seems like a good deal for a main dealer service to me, doubt an indie would come out much cheaper.
As well as getting the main dealer stamp you will also build a relationship, so when that expensive "what ever" fails out of warrenty, they are more inclined to help you out.
If you don't like BMW prices, don't for christs sake get a Merc!!

That's a really cute story... but I wonder what you'd charge if you had close to £10k pcm rent/lease costs, 40+ employees to pay, huge electricity bills, machinery costs, security costs, insurance, occasional goodwill payouts to cover problems and then still somewhere find a 10% profit margin to keep your headquarters happy.Any less than the figure you quoted and I'd almost be worried

So what about that quote is actually that heinous ?. I can't see anything which I think they are spanking you for. The second highest component of that quote is the tt! Not a lot they can do about that, unfortunately .Engine oil service labour 32.49

Tbh, I'm not fussed about bmw dealer stamps at service, as long as it's done and by a reputable independent I see no reason to use BMW anymore. Their prices are significantly more than the likes of VW who many are price matching their local area competition. Wait till you get your inspection2 price!! I get my cars serviced by reputation. If it's good enough for the ferrari(which is by no means devalued as owners know the reputable indies) it's good enough for my bmw.
I should add, this thread really highlights to me how the 5 year / 50,000 miles service pack BMW offers on new cars is invaluable.
It's £425 when you're buying new, which is a no brainer.
And if you're buying used, its worth waiting for one with the service pack to come up (its transferable) or be prepared to pay more for one which has it.

cracks me up how people bh and moan about service prices from a main dealer. If it bothered you that much why didn't you find out how much it was before buying the car.
Total Cost of Ownership, that's what's important.
The high cost of running a BMW is not exactly a secret is it? (especially when serviced by Main Dealerships!) - I've had BMW's for the last 24 years and I've never known them to be cheap cars to run.Total Cost of Ownership, that's what's important.
As for the OP's list: That's actually not that bad! - Perhaps they need to trade the BMW in and get a KIA instead?
