It is ghastly now. Just imagine it with blacked out windows, lashings of chrome, 20" inch alloys and all the other chav accoutrements which are currently so popular with the lower deck.
Bling mobile anyone? X6 when absolutely nothing else is more pimpy than your chavved up X5.
PS - Also applicable to decent Rangie owners. RR Sport?

It's execution of the idea is worse than I'd first anticipated. The brief of a sporty X5 isn’t a bad idea but it looks totally impractical therefore removing the one redeeming feature of 4x4 ownership (being better looking than an MPV or estate but still relatively practical). This car therefore is for posers of the highest order, overtaking the RR Sport IMO.

There are many redeeming attributes to SUVs and being the most practical vehicle is rarely the most notable. Being versatile 'enough' is clearly necessary, but for those of us who enjoy the dynamics of an uber-SUV then a move towards a more deliberately sporty version makes sense. Providing BMW position this X6 as a road-going Rallye-Raid type of vehicle (as used in the Paris Dakar) and build some further credibility by entering it in this year's event, then it will sell. Without such clear positioning they will make the same mistake as Mercedes did with the R-class. I have had my name on the list for nearly 2 years now, so will have first choice if BMW have designed what I think they should have, if not then I will give it a miss. But so far, it looks promising - nothing bad, but I reserve judegment until I see a more serious performance version.

Put my name down yesterday. I'm sure it will look better than the pics anyway.
I agree also with your comments above. The R class was a miss as it was essentially a 4 seater. I looked at one for my wife at Xmas time before realising that the rear seats were nigh on impossible to get into and when up, left no luggage space. Bought a Lexus RX instead as at least its a proper 5 seater. I did read in Autocar that the X6 looks like it will be only 4 seats though I dont want too much space in the back but 3 occasional seats would suit me better.
Also many people like the driving position of a 4x4, dont want to go around corners sideways all the time and are looking for something prettier than the current crop of 4x4's. That's me

I guess I put my name down originally as an 'alternative' to the increasingly less acceptable SUV, but I suspect it will be perceived as the same (well would you classify an R-class as and SUV or an Estate? Probably the former).Boshly
I actually enjoy driving an SUV quickly, perhaps they are something of a challenge, not in terms of lateral roadholding but more in terms of keeping the masses balanced and in control whilst carrying momentum.
I wonder if Porsche are already working on a competitor to the X6. I was over in Italy yesterday and after seeing half a dozen Panameras driving up into the mountains, we then spotted some development mules based on the Cayenne but considerably lower and wider (with tacked on wheel arch extensions). An X6-type model would be closer to Porsche's DNA and I suspect they would not want BMW to get too much of a head start on them.
