If I walk into a BWM main dealer with cash (no part ex, no finance) anyone got any suggestions or guidance on what you'd expect to be able to get off BMW main dealer second hand prices for an X5 3.0 SD M Sport?

i can see all the talk about car sales crashing, have heard talk of people getting tons off list for new cash purchases. Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts or experience of how low you can get dealers to go. If something's listed for 45k - decent spec, '08 model should it go for under 40k at the moment?

auctions a good bet? any suggested auction houses in the south east?

Hi,

Just bought a nearly new X5 SD with 2k miles on it having sold my M3.

Got one of the few BMW management cars that had just been released for £36k (do a national search on AUC). The car is just like new Aug 08 and v high spec (Listed at about £53k).

There are a few similar cars left on the approved used website at the mo.

I bought in same purchasing position as you. I wasnt getting any big discounts on top of the big cut in price already being offered.

Really happy with my purchase. IMHO its the best real world all round car that I can think of. Extremely smooth, spacious, practical, yet can crack 60 in under 7 seconds and top 147mph. Have tried alternatives such as R/R but as driving experience dont come close. I can really recommend the comfort seats - they were a must have for me having experienced them in a mates car.

I was finally convinced when I read about the lower spec 3.0D being quicker round Autocar's wet handling circuit than an Cayman S.

Loved the M3 but lack of practicality and comfort ultimately put me off getting another this time round.

Wow those cars are cheap! I sold my Nov 07 3.0d SE with similar spec (plus the 7 seat option) to a BMW dealer in April this year for £41000 - and it wasnt even an SD. I'd say i'd struggle to get £30K for it now if i still had it.

I also picked up one of the ex BMW management X5 3.0sd SE's just before Christmas. It was originally advertised at £37990 but by the time I arranged to see it, the price had been dropped to £35990. I had a 3 year old Discovery 3 SE to trade in, so I don't know what they would have sold it for straight cash. The deal I got was £34.7k for the X5 minus £12k for the trade-in. I think I was truely shafted on the Discovery, which I bought new for about £36k 3 years ago but in the end I was very happy with the overall deal, I guess you can't have it both ways.

The X5 is 9 months old with 6k on the clock and would have listed new at £51.2k. I've been extremely impressed so far, it's certainly a far more refined drive that the Discovery and the turn of speed is remarkable for such a large car. There are still plenty of these in the dealer network. From what I could work out, all seemed to have a registration starting with 'Y' and be priced around £35990. Do a search on www.bmw.co.uk and you should see them.

I think we as car buyers do tend to think locally, rather than nationally, and the BMW AUC site is a good way of seeing the best prices. I live in Northern Ireland but i would definitely have no qualms in flying to the mainland for the right deal. Its amazing the span of prices even for specific cars of specific age - it could be as much as six or seven thousand.
