Thinking of getting an X5 BUT?
Discussion
Can I jump in on this thread as well, like stuart I have been looking at these, quite like the 4.4, but it would have to have lpg conversion. Other than that it might be the 3 litre model.
Can you guys give me/us some idea of running costs/performance, just general experiences really.
Thanx, ( sorry for jumping in ).
Steve.

Whats the tax going to be on one of these monsters?
will it be worth it?
thanks for your help in advance.
If you are going to spend £10-£50k on a car, is an extra £200 a year, really an issue?will it be worth it?

It's the sort of car you buy when £200 or £300 a year is inconsequential. If £100 difference over a year is enough to make you think anything other than 'what a nuisance' then its probably not really the right car for you. An unfortunate repair bill could be 10 times that.
no no ive not been following the news and articals about the road tax, all i have heard is rumour control and ive heard its not a hundred pounds more but silly amounts like an extra £1k a year on tax.
also yes i know these are really expensive cars however the price they have come down to is pretty appealing to me i could pick one up for around £8k.

I think the government did a traditional u-turn on the mega tax for SUV's but I wouldn't put it past them to have another pop a the car at the very earliest opportunity.
As other have said tax is the least of your worries. Cost of tyres is far more relevant as they have the potential to cripple you far more than any draconian road taxation ever could.
Running an X5 is an expensive business while they're in manufacturers warranty - they only get more costly as time goes on.

Then £600 for a set of tyres. And £500 when not if the cooling system expires. Then £1000+ to refresh the suspension. Etc.Do not underestimate the relentless expense of a more complex BMW. Worth every penny, but don't buy an £8k one thinking it'll be completely plain sailing. After a year it'll owe you at least £10k.

Check out the running cost on my 4.4 LPG converted. I think it's good value for a prestige 4X4.Can you guys give me/us some idea of running costs/performance, just general experiences really.

I've got the 4.8is and it is brilliant. Ok fuel isn't great but i guess you could always get a lpg conversion on it. It's very spacious inside, its a comfy ride, but still quit sporty. the boot is huge easy swallows up all the shopping. it's good in the snow, I've been driving about all week because of the bad weather and it's fine, i haven't had any problems with it at all.
Mine is only 3 years old so i can't comment on what the reliability of the older ones are like but mines been great. I've had one or two tiny issues but all of them rectified under warranty. I would advise against the 3.0 petrol as they seem to be far less desirable;e than the bigger engined petrols or diesels, also they actually aren't that much more economical. If i were you i would buy a 4.4, 4.6 or a 4.8. Yes they will cost more on fuel, but the money you save when buying them will probably cover that.
Anyway hope that helps
