My car's (2000 330ci) heater fan has developed a very annoying squeak when its on at all times other than at the highest setting. I am presuming the fan motor bearings need lubricating? I am awaiting for my Haynes manual to come in the post but in the mean time does anyone know is this an easy D.I.Y job or is it a whole dash board off nightmare?!

You get at it via the engine compartment below/behind the pollen filter. Rather fiddly job in a tight place that's not the easiest to reach.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. I had my heater replaced a little while back, the chap who did it for me, said he hoped he wouldn't have to do another this decade.............

If you remove the pollen filter, the tray it sits in (4 torx screws) and the vertical panel behind that you can see the fan - a carefully aimed spray of your favourite slippery spray lube might help. Getting the fan out is the tricky bit; I think you need to move part of the wiper linkage and even then it's a tight squeeze. Removing the two plastic engine covers will help some. It's well tucked away.

Fixed! If you remove the pollen filter and cover, get a torch and look in the gap under the windscreen you can see the end of the fan motor and the fan itself, you have to look in from the right hand side-ish when facing the front of the car. I put the fan on a low speed and then with the torch shining in, sprayed some WD40 on the end and inside the motor. Job done- no more squeeks. It’s a very easy job. Thanks for the help!

the squeak will be back when the WD40 drys up and / or is displaced by the motor in operation..

What would you recommend? Is there something else I could use?
