130i M Sport (ED models) mpg
Discussion
I'm looking into opting out of my company car scheme (they keep watering down the list!) and was looking at 2007 models onwards with Efficient Dynamics. Now I've trawled through the various threads and there are some fleeting claims of up to 40 mpg - is this realistic for a 3.0l 265bhp engine?!
Whats a realistic figure for urban and motorway driving? I can only claim 17p per mile (business mileage) for this engine size, which by my calculations means I need to average 25 mpg on a run.
Obviously this depend hugely on how you drive, and it would be hard not to open up such a beast whenever the opportunity arose, but assuming an "economical approach" at 70-80 mph, what's it likely to average?

Hi Tom.
You would really have to be trying to get 40mpg out of a 130 but mid 30s are realistic on a run. I could pretty much get around 33 on my pre-ED version cruising at around 75-80. In an ED version you could expect a bit more so 35 seems realistic I'd have thought.
Go for it you wont be sorry !

Hello,
I currently have an ED 130i (57 reg - Nov 07 registered) and I have owned it for about 6 months.
At 70-80 mph I can achieve mid thirties easily. Best I have ever seen is 41mpg on a pretty constant 60mph run with minimal traffic, but I wouldn't want to drive like this all the time!
The 130i is a good motorway car - enough low down poke to keep up with the TDi crew, but open the taps and you'll be glad you went for a 6cyl petrol.
And if you are to find yourself on a 'private road' you will be consistently impressed with the relentless surge well into three figures...

Thanks guys, it seems mid 30's is a likely figure on a long cruise. I certainly don't need to be sold on its performance - a friend of mine used to work at BMW and had a 130 m sport as his company car (lucky sod!). It never failed to put a smile on our faces, but being that he didn't pay for his fuel and seemingly drove wearing lead shoes, he isn't best placed to comment on economy!!!
Its a stonking car for the money, I could, perhaps should, go for a 120d but I think I'd regret it the moment I pulled up alongside a 130!

I also opted out (just over a year ago) and have been keeping tabs on my fuel since, as I came from having a fully fueled car. I had to massage the numbers (for the purpose of the missus) in favor of the 130i to make it look sensible coming off the scheme 12 months and a house move later and I'm debating whether to sell and go back on, but having driven a friends 120D today I also know I'll regret it.
Anyway, in the last 12 months I've averaged on actual usage alone (not on the computer) 32.9mpg. I do have fairly traffic free drive to work but none of it is motorway, and if anything it encourages spirited driving, although there's not much stop/start.
Best I've had was 43mpg on a steady run from Manchester to Swindon, cruise set around 70 for most of the journey.
Mine's an E/D model btw..

I struggle to get over 30mpg from the 130i, even on long runs, it likes to sit at 70mph for good economy, unfortunately I don't!
It is strange as I can easily see 35mpg from the latest 330i (272bhp version engine and not the older one that is in the 130i) and got 38mpg over 2 days and 500 miles.

The new ED 330i is claimed by BMW to be a fair bit better on fuel, than the current 130i.It is strange as I can easily see 35mpg from the latest 330i (272bhp version engine and not the older one that is in the 130i) and got 38mpg over 2 days and 500 miles.
