I have recently bought a 2009 E61 530i which has the panoramic sun roof. I have noticed a fair bit of wind noise coming from the front. Is that normal or is it a sign of a dodgy seal?

Any thoughts/pointers would be much appreciated.

If it is coming from the Pano then you can get the seal for about £20. I have a new one for mine, however I am still waiting for time to fit it.

Definitely worth replacing the seal. A bit tedious but not difficult.

I need to change the seal on my 55 plate E61 soon as the seal is perished and lets in too much water. It's meant to make a lot of difference to wind noise too. However the seals they used were meant to be of a better quality after 2008.

Have the people who have done it had the car reprogrammed for the changed seal thickness? My indie has told me this needs doing.

I would have got it done but my sunroof currently gets stuck in the tilt position so I am a bit nervous about doing it in case it won't close again - garage thinks as a job it could be a bit open-ended. Otherwise I need to drive across to my brother's so he can give me a hand/I can shelter the car while we try to sort it.

Thanks all. Looking at that post on the 5 series forum I see that my car's build date means that I do probably needs a new seal although on the motorway this weekend I didn't notice wind noise at all. Of more concern is the puddle of oil on my drive.

Very easy to change the seal if you can get high enough (step ladder), and as for reprogramming the sunroof that's dead easy too.
Once you've finished the seal, just close the sunroof. Then hold the switch in the "open" position whilst the sunroof does a complete open/tilt/close cycle. This is the system 'learning' the limits of the mechanism. There are youtube videos for this too in case you are concerned.
Your garage is worried about the getting stuck in the tilt position, not about replacing the seal.

Does your roof still tilt front and back? If so, there are discussions all over the internet about disabling the rear tilt. This is good advice and could save you heartache in the long run (and ££££'s!).

Entirely agree with this - I'm sure the sunroof mechanism being problematic was the reason I got such a good deal when I bought my second 545i Touring. When I told the trader chap I'd have it as is, he seemed very happy smile

Cost me nothing to fix (by disabling the rear panel tilt), just used a Stanley knife and followed the instructions I found online.
