Blown turbo dilemma

Ok guys heres the deal. My BMW E60 530 diesel ran out of warranty 10 days ago and the turbo charger blew up on me on the way home tonight. For whatever reason I was never offered the option of extending the warranty despite the fact that the car has full main dealer history. In fact it was serviced last week and I only picked it up last Tuesday evening after it's MOT and vehicle check service. Do I:-

1. Take the car back to the main dealer to repair and hope that they at least offer to pay a fair proportion of the repair costs

or

2. Take the car to a specialist and get them to replace the turbo with a reconditioned unit

I reckon that it BMW offered to at least go halves on the repair it would work out at about the same cost as option 2. Either way it is going to cost me a few quid and the car and BMW are not exactly in my good books having failed it's MOT last week and the dealer having put a substantial dent in my bootlid (that I haven't approached them about because I can not prove it).

Your thoughts on this would be appreciated because I need to decide what to do with the car tomorrow. Also, costs of replacement (new & recon) units and contact numbers for suppliers if possible.

Hi Phelix,

The car has covered 72k miles. These have mainly been motorway miles and the car has been treated very gently indeed until fully up to temperature and always allowed to cool down before shutting the engine down. I'm tending to swing towards taking the car to the main dealer but there would definitely have to be 50% goodwill involved under the circumstances.

I just thought I'd let you all know that I received a phone call today from BMW and they are going to repair my car free of charge. It has restored my faith in the brand and I am over the moon that they have done the decent thing. Looks like I won't be changing it for an Audi just yet!
