I've been dithering about what to go for next for some time. In May I had half an eye on the 645i. It seemed you needed to spend £28k for a high-spec early model. I've just looked again and now there seem to be loads of AUC cars for £23k. I know the market is bad, but another £5k drop in less than 3 months??

Anyone else noticed this?

Why is this? They're not mega-heavy on fuel are they? And the VED is not going to be worse than any other top band car.

Is the trade price really that low?

I think four-figure 6's is a little optimistic (unless it takes five years to reach the horizon). I'm sure you'll be able to dig up a monster-miler at the auctions sub-£10k in a couple of years, but in terms of the Main Stealer prices it's a long way from £23k to £10k for a car that started at £55k.
Agree.

But if I can buy an AUC car for £23k and sell it for £10k in three years, I'd be quite happy.

My MPG is s**t though, on a recent motorway journey could only average 18mpg, but I was not hanging around wink. Around some country lanes got it down to 8mpg.
eek

I thought they were good for 20mpg overall, driven moderately??

AUC cars about £23k.

Private/small dealer about £19k.

Is the extra £4k worth it?

Well, it looks like they've taken another hit! Now several on the official BMW site around the £21k mark and even a couple at £19950. Awesome value!

If the stealers are retailing these cars at 23k, they would have paid approx 15K at best. Given most metal of this nature is depreciating by 1-2K per month, the trade price of this car will be 10K in 5 months! It's not just the high end motors that are subject to depreciatation of this magnitude. An 07/57 Gold GT TDi 170 with 11,000 miles trades at 11 - 12K!
No. If they are retailing at £23k, they would have paid £18k or so.

And you have to look at depreciation as a percentage, not a flat sum, otherwise they would be paying you to take the car away!

Half a dozen of good spec 645 examples I had my eye on have now disappeared off the AUC site. I guess £22k must be the 'sweet spot' for a 2004 car.

Most of them are turning up at car auctions
I must admit I was puzzled that after hanging around they suddenly sold, but do you know this for sure?

Interesting that BMW dealers now seem to be undercutting private sellers. Look at these two very similar cars:

http://www.bmw.co.uk/bmwuk/auc/car_details/0,,1260...

And the dealer's car is a year younger!

There is a 2004 645 on autotrader currently for just under £12000. These are crazy times....
I doubt that can be a genuine ad or, if it is, the car must be a dog/mega-miles/super-naff spec.

A good spec lowish mileage (under 40k) 645 still costs around £20k if BMW Approved Used or £18k elsewhere.
