Leak in rear foot well? any ideas

Folks

Got an e39 525i with a puddle in the drivers side rear footwell. Its a 2002 car so cant be rust!

Any ideas on where the leak may originate from?

Thanks for the replies.

Checked seals and door membrane..all in tact and look new.

Taken the matts out and noticed the two holes in the floor, which I assume are for the orginal matts, full to the brim with water. I press on them and water is pouring up. Amazed as to how much water is there so sponged up as much as I can and left it.

Before I think of removing the carpets..any other suggestions?

No sunroof and no damage either so Im baffled. All seals, trim appear to be in order and I can't find any run off or areas that show where water may have been down.

Must admit its not something I'd expect from the germans!
