Got my eyes on 2 different boots, the Alpinestars SMX R's and the Sidi Vertigos.
Can anyone give some insight on what either boot has to offer as the advertising spiel is a bit hard to follow to a newbie.

I wear SIDIs but I hear many good things about the Alpinestars far and beyond SIDIs

I've got alpinestars SMX-4's and I love them, comfy, warm, waterproof and they don't squeak at all.

Would definitely recomend them.

I also had a 70mph high side with them on and they stood up very well.

Indeed. I would also question the quality of Sidis in that they seem to have zips come off etc after a short while - they are bloomin' comfortable and with excellent 'feel' though.

My sole on the left boot started peeling away after only 4 months but Sidi's importer in the UK is very good, so although things to go wrong, there's good service.

If it were me, I might try the Alpine Stars, purely because I've tried Sidis!

My sidi's are rubbish.

The zipper tag fell off after 6 years and now replaced with a cable tie, and the sole has probably only got another 2 years left on them.

6 years sounds like quite reasonable mileage to me!

I can get the SMX R's for slightlye cheaper than the Sidi's which are almost £160 so they're similar in price.

I've had SMXR's. Zips split from the leather on their second outing.

Currently got Sidi Vertigo Corsa Air. Lovely boot, very comfortable, don't squeak at all (unlike the alpinestars I hasten to add), and are great to walk in. However, they were looking pretty shabby after 6 months, soles peeling at the toes, 'shock absorber' on the heel went awol, that sort of thing. Still in service, for hacking around in, but I've since bought a pair of daytona evos which feel like they're going to last longer than I am, lovely fit too.

I know mr nemesis on here has a pair of vertigos that've taken a hell of a beating for quite some years, and my mates have lasted 6 years so it's quite possible that mine went down the line when the Quality bloke was having a dump or something.

On the right hand side of the bars is a lever. I us that rather than using my feet as anchors. wink

I do this quite often though bad habit, dragging my feet around as I pull off or slow behind stationary traffic.

You're right, it's a terrible habit I picked up from commuting on the NC30.

I have Sidi Vertigo Corsa, had them for a couple of years and they are very comfortable (best I've had) so far no problems although the 'Sidi' writing inlay is starting to come out of the soles (bike has 'rough' alloy footpegs). Previously had A-stars (GP tech?) which were like wellies with baggy tops (and I've not got thin legs) lost the sliders, they were uncomfortable for walking in and the zip broke all in around 2 years.

Sidi gets my vote. thumbup

The “Sidi squeak” goes with a spray of Motorex Protect and Shine on the ankle!

I have a pair of Sidi Vertigos and so does my girlfriend. On hers a zip tag broke and on mine both zips broke! I have bodged a repair with key rings. The rear tension adjuster fell off (quickly repaired by the dealer foc) on mine and the soles are worn smooth making them slippery on wet footpegs. I have only had them around 18 months. I do like them and they are comfortable but they do not appear to be very hard wearing.

Just bought a pair of Daytona Evo Goretex and although they are a bit dearer (rrp is around £460 I think) they really are streets ahead in terms of quality. The Daytonas have a rigid inner boot offering much greater ankle protection and as ankles are very easy to break and often difficult to mend that swayed it for me.
