Just wondering - after trailing through a very looooong 50 zone with average speed checks at 11pm t'other night on a near deserted stretch of motorway, it occurred that all the cameras are facing you (or do they?!). Thinking that my numberplate faces backwards, I wanted to just get on with the journey as I was finding it a right royal pain in the arse, but chickened out and stayed at 50....

Fair enough with heavy traffic during the day, but at night when there's no work being done and crucially no traffic......

Anyone been done on a bike?

i've got a feeling that the cameras now face both ways pacifically(sp) so motorcyclists can be targeted. Didn't have this a few years ago but we do now i think.

That being said 11pm no1 around i'd be tempted to stick a piece of card over the plate evil

It's bad enough in a car when your doing 50mph for no reason whatsoever!

I noticed this too on the M80 from Glasgow to Stirling. 10 miles of 40mph with av cameras, all facing towards you. Some parts of the road are too far from the other lane for the camera facing the back of you to see. Still, bottled it and stuck to 40ish...

I know the ones on the M4 are purely forward facing so you could go through them at whatever speed you please...

Cheers Original poster, those ones on the M4 are a pain in the backside!

Planning to be doing a bit of riding instead of driving on that route soon so nice to know i can cruise through at a decent speed and not pootle along for no reason.

All those supposed 'road works' by cardiff and i don't think i've ever seen a workman there so don't see an argument for 'their safety' being justified. Why can't they use those electronic signs to change the speeds to suit different times. or is that to hard to do when they're trying to use cameras to score cash off a motorist?

If they're forward facing I believe they work on numberplate recognition, so on a bike they shouldn't even take your photo - you are, theoretically, invisible.

Some do have rearward facings cameras too now, but not many.

The only rear facing cameras Ive seen so far in average speed zones are on the A38 just north of Bassetts Pole.

Without sounding too dull, just because they are forward facing doesn't give us the right to hoon through at whatever speed suits. I do the M4 ones daily and generally hover around the posted limit depending on traffic. It's especially irritating as no-one ever seems to be doing any work!

The ones up by Cardiff are a nightmare as well, in fact, most of the M4 is just crap!

True. I stick to a safe speed rather than the limit though, just like I do everywhere out of town.

Anyone know if the M25 Specs (from M1 to M40 junctions) are rear facing?

I'd assumed all specs were forward facing only (certainly appear that way on M25 and M4). Might have taken advantage a little on my first commute on the bike today whistle

Front, the ones on the M25 around Heathrow towards Surrey are rearward thou...same as the ones on the M1 junctions 10-13, I commute into London every day and sit thru them at 50ish MPH, on the way back from the Ace heading home on the bike, the short stretch I flcik thru at night I sit at 100+ if the traffic allows..I see it as one of the little bonus's of having a bike...

I think these cameras are only active if a variable limit is in place. i.e. no specific speed posted, then no cameras active. If that is not the case then I have been a lucky boy for the past 5+ years!

The specs on the M3 are forward facing - at least from J1 to J4. I'd have no license if that were not the case.

+1 - I don't get mad, but I do a safe speed - and some of those 40 and 50mph average limits are stupid!

They are certainly stupid when the roadworks are not existent like they are 90% of the time!

Just because they don't have a numberplate doesn't mean you won't get caught. At the end of the day it's your license, but there are enough people out there that want to limit or ban biking becuase of a few idiots, lets not give them more ammunition.

I don't think average speed (SPECS) cameras work like that though. They record your plate between two known points rather than using lines on the road over a few metres like that. If they can't pick up a plate they can't see you.

At least thats what I though anyway! hehe
