''851'', those numbers just sound good, don't they?

92x64 that was, too.

I miss her, not as flash as a nice SP2 or SP3 but would still find space in my fantasy garage for her. Red, Loud and Italian - bit like my brother in law, only I dont like riding him

Yes, they were cool, it doesn't look as nice on the new 1098 in Tricolore colourscheme. Dates the bike a bit I think?

For me, the tri-colour scheme was for then, if you get me.
Not such an impact now, imo.

Whilst on the subject of fast Ducatis, a REALLY special one i got to ride once, was a rare '955', a USA bike which was basically a highly tuned 916, with 2mm more on the piston diameter. (2mm down on the 996).
It made some ridiculous amount of power for a twin of it's day, but was i suppose, a race bike for the street.
That thing flew.

I remember Fast By Ferraci did a race conversion kit, both for the 748 and 916, the 916 one going to 955 - there used to be a UK distie but he went tits up owing loads of money for bikes he had sold but never delivered.

There have been a few for sale as well - almost all ex race team bikes

I've owned a few Ducati's now and my favourites have got to be the Multistrada (I know, it's not pretty, but you ride one and really tell me it doesn't make you smile wink ) and my current 848. I had a 996S trackbike for a short while, but the 848 nearly matches it for power and it runs rings around it in the handling stakes. It might not be as desirable as it's bigger brother, but it truly is a stunning little bike, a real leap on from the 748/9 in terms of handling and performance. I think the current Monster, the restyled 696 will be seen as a landmark bike one day too, as that's also moved the game on in the budget, naked class.

recent trackday at Cadwell smile

Yes, it was about 1800 miles old-ish, completely standard down to the tyres and everything smile Only things I've done to it are to add the rack for taking luggage on long trips, the hugger for keeping dirt off the back and a tank protector. So many people seem to be modifying the suspension on them, but it wore it's tyres perfectly that day and it's only now, at about 2700 miles that they might be getting close to having to be changed. I think it's the best 'straight out the crate' bike I've ever ridden.

LOL biggrin I like to use it as Ducati intended. Well, try to. We're off to Spa and the Nurburgring in a couple of weeks, it should be the perfect sports 'tourer' for the job (lucky I'm a short arse really!).

You are!
Very wide and/or very tall and tiny modern sports rockets don't go together too well!
