Surely agostini is the 'goat'. Regardless of who people beleive is the bravest or who rode the scariest bikes, no matter what era your in if your in moto gp your racing the best there is.
I think agostini has the most wins and championships (although im probably wrong) so untill someone beats his records then surely by definition hes the greatest of all time?

fk me, some of you are taking it a bit serious.
watch the race and enjoy it that's all any of us fans have to do, not decide who's the greatest of all time.
People started asking whether Marquez is the greatest of all time, you don't reckon that will ignite some discussion?watch the race and enjoy it that's all any of us fans have to do, not decide who's the greatest of all time.
And with all due respect, it's not for you to tell any of the rest of us how to enjoy GPs. I have a huge interest in the history of the sport, not just what's on TV today so apologies if that's annoyed you. The fact that most others are chatting about it suggests maybe others do too
Anyone claiming Marquez to be the GOAT in what is his 1st season, is deluded.
Have this discussion in 15 years time when he's doing what Rossi did this weekend.
I think it will be very interesting to see how MM bounces back from Brno, and if DP/JL/VR can up the ante knowing MM has been beaten.

I think to be even spoken of as a potential Goat, he has to get through a few era.
Rossi has done 2strokes, 4strokes and the advent of electronics. God knows what will be new at the back end of Marc's career but he has to prove he can do it for years and cope with change. Stoner maybe could have been one, really shouldn't have quit.

True, but wasn't this in an era when it was far less physical, and most riders would compete in more than one class per round.I think agostini has the most wins and championships (although im probably wrong) so untill someone beats his records then surely by definition hes the greatest of all time?
Such comparisons are always bloody hard, hence my apples and oranges comment (hell some even involve bananas).

It's his second in MotoGP. Have this discussion in 15 years time when he's doing what Rossi did this weekend.

MM is smug. I look forward to when Iannone is going to kick MM's arse again soon
2016 will be interesting for many reasons. MM will be in his 4th season in Moto GP, Ianone will be on the new Ducati having had a season to sort it, Scott Redding should be on a competitive bike, Pol Espargaro will have a few seasons experience, Aleix will be in his 2nd season on the new Suzuki. Not to mention Dovi--Rossi--Lorenzo--plus any that come up from Moto 2/3 during 2015.
Everyone will be on new tyres and control ECU. So it will be like pressing the reset button. Pol/Ianone and Scott could all run with and beat Marc on Moto 2 bikes so a level playing field may just shake things up.
Lets see.

I know I will get flamed for this, but does anyone think MM was just going for a ride with no intention of trying to win? Didn't look like the usual MM style of riding, noreal effort put in at all.
I know this opinion is probably ridiculous but the pressure of trying/expected to win every round may have been getting on his tits. As Pedrobot was strong all weekend, no skin off Hondas nose to let him have a 'weekend off'.
Yeah I know, rubbish, keep your stupid ideas to yourself, sut up you mong!

Again, balls to devils advocate. You really reckon that Surtees relied on bravery over skill? Having seen him on track as a 65 year old against riders a third his age, he has some talent.
Point is none of us know. Possibly Rossi or Marquez are the greatest of all time, but we'll never know whether Harold Daniels, Stanley Woods, Mike Hailwood, Geoff Duke could have shown them a clean pair of heels. Equally Rossi really struggled after Simoncelli's death, would he have coped if there was two or three riders dying a meeting? We'll never know, maybe he would.
But, that's my point. Why current 'fans' reckon they need to decide someone is the greatest of all time is frankly bks unless you actually know who all the riders of all time are, surely?!
How many that claim someone to be the GOAT could even name all the World Champions? If they can't, how can they make that claim?

- If it's all about being skill full whilst looking death in the eye then surely that would mean that McGuinness and M Dunlop are currently the best riders in the world and could take it to MM and Lorenzo? The old GPs and modern GPs are so different to each other if is practically the equivalent of comparing rally drivers to F1 drivers and picking 'the greatest'.
- What's with the downer on current fans? You don't think that people have been having this discussion since the second generation of bike racers came along? It exists in pretty much every sport and is just human nature.

I was talking to a mate yesterday afternoon, saying that I thought he had been put off. Of course, my instinctive paranoia told me that he had been instructed to make the championship more interesting, but either way, I just don't think the real Marquez turned up yesterday...morebeanz said:

He has openly said that now in his 2nd year he will try to win but if this is not possible he will finish in the best position possible.
Honda could not take the gamble that Pedrosa would deliver and dope MM93 as it were. Not ever HRC are there to win and MM is their best hope of that.
Once the title is wrapped up then perhaps we may see some team shenanigans but until then MM wants to win or at worst accumulate points.

Overnight thoughts. I think yesterday gave me even more respect for the aliens JL, DP, VR. They are the best of their class (ex-MM) and have all been beaten 10 times this season by a seemingly untouchable young kid who knows no fear, no failure, no injury.
The adulation this season has been almost disrespectful to what those 3 have achieved despite them bouncing back from various injuries/failures in their storied careers. However, yesterday they showed resilience and enough grit and determination to outride the 'untouchable' upstart. Bloody good on them too.
I'm not a huge Pedrobot fan, but what he achieved yesterday was monumentally superb!! All those naysayers of him questioning why he should be part of Team HRC are silenced. For me, the season starts now.

Some good stuff
Although I can't fully agree. I would suspect that MM's poor (by him) showing yesterday was down to a mechanical issue/tyre problem. Especially as the crew were all over his rear tyre when he came in. His body language showed his disappointment but that's to be expected, he's a racer who wants to win and knows he can. He's not there for the runners up prize. However, it proves that everyone has bad days and the rest of the field capitalised superbly. But as we have seen 10 previous times this season MM is just that bit better on a like for like machine. 10 wins on the bounce is no fluke. Yes, Dani did well but I think next race normal service will be resumed. If MM is the new benchmark then its going to take new blood to take the fight to him. To be to be best you must beat the best which is exactly what Jorge and Casey did when VR was the pinnacle of the sport.
