CBT passed and Theory test booked for mid-November. What's the best approach (effectiveness and value for money) to swatting up; online practice tests, nose in a hard copy book...?

The CBT instructor mentioned a DVSA app for a fiver; sounds good but id prefer not to spend any more time staring at my phone.

Any previous experience welcomed.
I used 'Motorcycle Theory Test and Hazard Perception 2020' by Deep River Development Ltd; google play on my phone. Paid £7 if I recall correctly. The same questions and hazard perception as the actual test. Ended up just a couple of marks short of an ace on the hazard perception part and full marks on the questions. Don't bother faffing with books or anything like that. Just keep doing the videos and questions on the app.

Thanks All. Went for Krikkit's suggestion in the end. It also has some app element too. Will revert back after the test!

I'm upgrading the front brakes on my bike, I've got the calipers and have been looking at replacement discs. The ones I have been looking at seem to have 5 or 6 rivets / buttons but I've been offered some and they have 9.

This got me thinking about the buttons and I understand what they do but is more better ? If so, why?

Un-sprung weight difference would be negligible and I doubt they could transfer significantly more loading through to the rotors for harder braking on a road bike so are they there just for looks or for some other reason??
Not sure I can answer your exact question, however I've had some after market japanese discs that had about ten buttons per disc that weren't even round on the carrier - they went back to be replaced by a pair of black shadow discs which were good. More recently bought some EBC x series discs for my R1 which have 6 buttons with flat sides to allow for differential expansion of carrier and disc

https://ebcbrakes.com/articles/sd-system-square-dr...

they've been good including a reasonable thrashing round the track from time to time. My message being buy from a reputable manufacturer who has invested time and money developing their product rather than cheapo ste off ebay.

Check the disc runout with a dial gauge on installation to keep it to a minimum

Did u find a good method for calculating braking and thinking distances for the test? In the end I spent an hour memorising them as I found I’d left it too late to get a reliable formula.

I just found something on Google images and printed it off and used that to try and memorise. Typically I didn't get one braking or stopping distance question in the test.

Yeah I just memorised them. I think the same ones come up and there is a handful of them. No way would I be fking about doing maths in the test laugh

Slightly off topic, but do they ask you to estimate distances in the test these days? Knowing that the stopping distance from 50mph is 53 meters* is pointless unless you know what 53 meters looks like.

* For whatever random vehicle it's based on that bears no relation to the performance of your vehicle or the road conditions

They did on mine at that was just over 12 months ago. I just assume I'm thick for not being able to visualise the stopping distances because they have a fair few variations on it in the test.

My bike insurance has carrying a pillion passenger included as well as being able to ride other bikes. Only I am covered to ride my bike.

My Mrs bike insurance does not have pillion cover and I am a named rider on her policy.

If, on the very rare occasion I may need to ride her bike, with her as a pillion, am I covered for riding with a pillion or not? Gut feeling tells me I'm not? but I'm not 100% sure on that?

This.

I suspect the answer will be no as the insurers will claim that you being a named rider takes priority over your riding other bikes cover.

I wouldn't bet on it though and wouldn't like to have to make a claim under those circumstances.

ETA Actually, I'm changing my mind. The only insurance you have to ride her bike with her on the back is yours, so you're covered under your policy. Again, wouldn't bet on it. Insurers would have to confirm.

Anyone had experience of costs for transporting a small bike? Looking to get an R125 to tide me over/get experience whilst waiting to get my A licence. Looking at fairly cheap ones (sub £2k) and having only ever priced up car transport once or twice.

Couple places in london have a few in stock and waiting for them to give me quotes to bring a bike up to Aberdeen. What's deemed good or bad cost wise with bikes? Price per mile etc?

Really hard finding anything suitable up here within budget.

Have a look on Facebook marketplace, there’s quite a few on there just now around Aberdeen. Must be people selling off at the end of the season.

Apologies was meaning the Yamaha Yzf-R125. Had a seat on a friends at the weekend and it does suit what I'm after, for a bit of cbt fun hehe. But alas they hold their value well.

Ah, fair enough!

There’s a cbr125 on there just now which may be similar.

At 2k and for something you don’t intend to keep longer term I’d just be looking for something the right shape and in decent condition, rather than tying it down to one bike. Probably.

Have spotted a couple of the CBR's & going to enquire I think.

I know I'd likely get the same enjoyment out a similar one but there's something about the older Yamahas that I love. I enquired about one new when I was 17 but never got round to it. I think I'm just wanting to relive being young hehe

I know it's not the most fun way to spend a weekend with the current weather but riding is doable?

600 miles using motorways, further if you’re avoiding them because of riding a 125.
I’d hire a van!

When I had a look, if you're flexible on dates you can get it for approximately 50p a mile
