hear what your saying, try getting a quote online to compare the difference? problem is once he starts putting his hands in his pockets and you step away from your insurance the ball will be in his court.
if you stay with the same insurance company when you get a 125 they will not want to see you leave, and may take into consideration the details of the accident.

carol nash are a reputable broker in my opinion let them do the hard work you have already paid for, ask them personally how it will affect your policy when you renew!?

If you do it all privately you're taking quite a leap of faith. If he starts to piss you about based on what his idea of 'quite expensive' is you'll have no one backing you up.

I had a guy knock the footpeg off my bike undertaking me in traffic when I stopped for a police car, it was a few years back now. Anyway he said he'd pay, that was until Mr. Suzuki said the parts were £130. I had declared the matter to my insurers and in the end had to go after him with uninsured loss recovery, because the amount was less than the excess. They went after him through the county court - it must have taken close to two years and then as if my magic a cheque arrived through the post. Dern is spot on, doing it between him and you only is a risk, when he finds out how much bikes cost to fix.

Carl, I must say for a lad of 16 that’s a good , well written post, if not a good subject.

You sound like a young lad with your head screwed on..I wish the best with your case and keep on riding mate.

Thanks Podman. I have dropped the bike off at a bike shop today and will find out the cost tomorrow. I have decided to tell him the cost and not cancel the insurance claim until I have the money. He will know how much it will cost tomorrow and has said it depends on the cost to repair the bike. That way there is no messing about with payment because if he doesn't pay, I'm going through the insurance. Thanks

I have a quote on the price of all the work that the bike needs now. Comes to £285 including labour. I have phoned Terry and he has agreed to pay for the damages privately and will drop the money round tonight or Monday. Once I have the money, I will cancel the insurance. I'm also having a brand new tyre fitted as my other one already had been damaged but the car had damaged the side wall. I'm happy with the outcome and it means I should also have the bike for Monday at the latest. The bike is not bent either which is very lucky.

Thanks.

No, no hire bike. The bike is OK to ride on the road as it is. I think I may leave the panel and transmission casing as they are with the scratches in. Most 50's are like that anyway and its £120 for a new panel and £30 if its not sprayed. I have been quoted over £60 to spray the current panel and then £60 for the transmission casing. The stand can be bent back into shape and the rear brake light lens costs over £40 because it has to be the full tail. The bike shop charged me £30 for the quote !!! She said its refundable if I have the work carried out. Is that about right? Thanks.

I think you're over complicating it a bit. He hit you and you did nothing wrong. Your bike should be fixed so that it's in the same condition it was before he hit you and he should pay for all of it. It's up to you what you want to do, but think about what happens when you sell the bike on, to get a bigger one. If it has scratches/damage, then that'll need explaining to the potential buyer and they'll want money off, so you lose out. You shouldn't be losing out here.

Steve.
