Call me old fashioned but I like a bike that has bottom end grunt to pull out of the bend without being on the power band that will spit you off at the slightest twist of the throttle. That’s why I love 1000cc plus bikes. Big torque to get going and loads of yee-haa when you want it.
From the thread and thanks for all your comments, it looks like the R1 takes it! I must admit the ZX10R was mental but I was shouting out at it when I was trying low revs grunt through bends, it was flat as hell. It's not all about screaming down the road and being on the edge of spinning out for me.
At the end of the day we are riding on roads and not a race track and I just want a bike that has the grunt to drop into a bend and drag your boots off out of it (which the ZRX1100 has) but with the handling of a modern sports bike where you can scuff your elbows with confidence.
The Duce seems to have the grunt and yee haa and handling but the price for that is too high for me.
So do I go R1, GSXR or Blade? Oh bugger!
Mark.
In that case, I would refer the honourable gentleman to the previous answer of a ridiculously good handling, grunty as a pig with a loudspeaker fitted, and gloriously anti-social on chat Italian V-Twin that doesn't have to come in Resale Red. The value on a Mille is quite simply unbelievable at the minute. Go ahead, buy two From the thread and thanks for all your comments, it looks like the R1 takes it! Ok.. i'm a touch biased! Incoming....
Personally i think the K5/K6 Gixxer 1000 is a stonking bike with great bottom end and allround power. Looks nice too.
The Aprilia Mille Factory looks absolutely divine.
But i'm still a fan of the 04/05 ZX10r just as it seems a bit rough n ready!
R1.
Has to be. 3 bikes have really revolutionised sports bikes in the last 20 yrs.
The Fireblade, the R1 and the GSXR1000K5 (though to a slightly lesser extent).
And because the R1 made a bigger impact in its original incarnation and then stayed at or near the top every year since (except 2003 maybe), thats my vote. And Im right.
ETA: I guess the 916 is quite good too

If i was buying a mega sports bike in 2009, i'd have to go for the 1098R.
To me, that bike is everything a red-blooded sports biker could want.
Looks to die for, extremely high quality, design and spec., fantastic performance, with genuine traction control, a soundtrack like no other, mid-range power to be adored!
Impossibly desirable bike!

I think the new R1 will be like all the newest UJM 1000s.
Very capable bikes and very fast bikes.
But the 1198S and 1199R offer something more than speed specs and lap times, as good as those are.
A VW Golf GTI is probably a better car than an Alfa Romeo Brera 3.2 V6, but i know which i'd choose.

25k for the R version. I wonder what sort of bike the Japanese could build for a retail price in that region.
Give it another 7 or 8 years and we'll be looking at a 2 ltr Ducati.
I can't argue about how nice they look, but for a riding experience they aren't in any way special are they?

Engine capacity?
They won't go any bigger than 1200cc, for supersports v twins, because the cylinder size is now at the optimum/biggest.
A 1500cc (or 2000cc) v twin sports bike, would have too much piston speed, unless they gave it crazily oversquare dimensions, then that would bring problems of it's own.
A Ducati supersports certainly is 'special'. I changed my GSXR1000 for a Ducati 999R and, whilst not quite as quick in outright terms, it gave me far more rider satisfaction. It looked and sounded awesome and everyone who saw it wanted to ride the thing.
Yep, the Japanese could probably build something much faster and maybe lighter for £25K, but it still wouldn't be a 1199R.

I always say, that for someone looking to buy a fast Ducati, for the first time, buy a secondhand but mint 749R.
OK, it's not madly fast, but is still plenty quick enough for the road.
Affordable now used, beautiful revvy engine, wondrous soundtrack and great handling.
The engine is never going to frighten you, either, unlike the much more raw 999R or 1098R.
