Oh and BTW forget itallian st.

Freind bought an Aprilia RSV Mille and it constantly let him down.
He never even made it home when he picked it up new.
What was the reason?

Ahhh! Yes! They are .... er .... a little on the firm side! (Perhaps it's just me, but I would never really view an SP1/2 as an alternative to a VFR!)

If your going to be doing some miles dont forget to factor in the servicing costs, isnt the Aprilia a tad awakward/expensive to service?

Having said that, the big service on VFR is a few quid as well if I remember rightly.

I also have to say my friends RSV has left him stranded 3 times in one summers ownership so I personally dont have much confidence in them.

Out of the Hondas its got to be the Blackbird, apart from engine noise and having a V4 what advantage does the VFR have over the Blackie? Its not any lighter is it...

I look after mine and they're not that difficult to look after - no more so than any other bike anyway. There are known niggles, but I've worked through them all now as there's plenty of advice on the forums. The motor itself and the finish are both good. It depends on if you're prepared to get stuck in for yourself or not I guess. Servicing is more expensive than Jap' though at £250 minor and £350 major from what I remember. It costs me only consumables, so rather less! To say it's a POS is wide of the mark, badly prepared or serviced I can believe though. The big service on a VTEC VFR is pretty eye watering according to a friend who had one - £800 - perhaps he was done over I've never verified that amount with a dealer.

The dealer never told him but he was riding along and it just died.
Then tey were not keen on helping him,
they just said " get it back to us and we'll look at it" :

How TF do you get it back to them when you are broken down in the middle of nowhere?

I don't think so.

As an old git of 43 I find my SP1 fine.

It's no worse that any other similar sports bike IMHO

My point was the VTR and SP are different kettles of fish, fine bike the SP sounds lovely with decent cans on it, but it is pretty focussed. The SP is not what I'd call a VFR replacement, the VTR is.

I'm going to punt that the battery went flat because the alternator wasn't properly charging the battery. Known issue and one with a work around, but Aprilia have never officially acknowledged a problem. I sorted mine out with a replacement reg/rec from a chap in the US + a bit of soldering.

Mate of mine's got an early Firestorm and I find the vibration really noticable and annoying.

I would suspect that the carbs need to be balanced.

For a V Twin its smooth as silk

Try a Duke, try a Harley.

I rode a Buell last year and it just shook the whole bike frown

He's had it for years and it's always been as vibey, I think I'm just used to something smoother. Was amazed how smooth the MT-01 is for a 1700cc V-twin, and I've had a go on a Harley Softail, which is much lower frequency vibration as it's only doing one potato per lamp post. Buell Ulysses is good for comedy vibration, at tickover the indicators flap like wings, but again it's a lower frequency vibration than the Firestorm. I ride a parallel twin and its way smnoother.

My mate also had that "known" issue as well as every other "known" issue inc the cracking swingarm...

For some that may be part of the "hands on charm" of the Italian expierence but ill pass thanks..

Back in 1995 ish I went with a mate of mine to collect his new Ducati 600 Monster.
It was 1st August and there was a queue to collect bikes

The dealer was handing out spare parts with each new bike, depending on what model you had bought.
My mate was given a new Voltage regulator as " they all go at about 1800 miles"

Sure enough it did leaving him stranded.
