How much would that bike he used in the Great Escape go for? It's just an old German bike I assume so probably not worth much.
It wasn't an old German bike used in the film. WW2 era BMW/Zundapp etc were not up to the task of those stunts etc., so a modern (i.e 1963) Triumph was dressed up to look vaguely WW2 ish.And yes it would be worth a fortune.
And as an aside, genuine WW2 era German motorcycles arn't 'not worth much' at all

Great bike and the sort I plyed my then trade on in the early 70's!
BUT if that is out of your price league and you want a "Steve Mqueen" bike, how about one of these!

Built by the same people who built the original, utterly gorgeous in a retro and even modern way too. If they were road legal from the factory, I would have one in the garage right now, dont care how much!!
Road legal from the factory you say, get your wallet out Paul, I saw one in the factory being made ready for a customer last weekBUT if that is out of your price league and you want a "Steve Mqueen" bike, how about one of these!

Had a couple of XL250 Honda's years back.
2nd one threw me off and shot me about 14 foot up in the air!
My right hip still aches occasionally!
I wonder if either Jay Leno or Tom Cruise might buy this?
Both real Petrol Heads, so lets hope it gets used!
Is it about time they did a film about his life??

I'd heard it was a Triumph TR6 from McQueen's own collection, don't know how true that is though.Steve Evil said:

TR6 - Steve McQueen's Great Escape Bike. The motorcycles used during Great Escape chase scene were 1961 Triumph TR6 Trophy models disguised as German BMW R75 motorcycles. Steve McQueen did much of the riding for the film himself, although Bud Ekins performed the famous jump scene as McQueen's stunt double. Von Dutch, the famous pin-striper and artist, actually converted the motorcycles for the movie while working at Ekins shop. The TR6 was developed and produced specifically for the US market, which was Triumph's largest export market, and was in particular targeted towards California desert racing.
