Yes, totally lucked out with the weather. The first road out from Machynlleth to join the B4518 was superb, rolling twisties through green hills with drop offs either side. I'm going to arrange a longer trip later in the summer.

Glad you enjoyed it!

I'll second the post above, the roads around Bala, Blaenau Ffestinnog (spelling?) and Betws-Y-Coed are all great and worth a bit more of a travel.

You've inspired me to plan a similar sort of thing - next few weeks I reckon.

I've been planning to do a trip like this as well. As I live in Belgium, I could accommodate you if you want, depending on how you're planning to cross the channel.

So another year passes and I'm planning another weekend in the land of our fathers. This time I'm doing the southern half...any recommendations? I was thinking of doing the A40 to Fishguard and then north on the A487.

I'd recommend cutting out the A40 from around the Lea/Pontshill area, following the A4136 down to Monmouth, its a nice bit of road with some nice views smile

Can't give much more advice beyond that, but I do the above route most days smile

Yep I did that route last year and it was good. Highly likely I'll do it this time too.

As per the thread title, I fancy a trip to the continent in the summer but my usual crowd aren't doing anything this year.

Is anyone going in a group that welcomes a tag-along? The Old Gits trip looks good but sadly the times don't work for me.

I'm on a Sprint ST.
In preparation for next year, put the following dates in you diary - Sat 16/Jun/2018 to Sun 24/Jun/2018. The Old Gits are heading back to the South East of France to finish what we started this year. biggrin

A483 from Newtown to Builth Wells is a bit of fun. Mostly 50mph limit, not balls out quick but nice and twisty and some great series of bends, from a few very tight/hairpins to some - ahem - "fast sweepers"...

I'm doing a 4/5 day trip at the end of June down to the Moselle valley via Luxumbourg, then the nurburgring, eifel mountains and Spa.

900 miles from Calais and back, 4 days riding plus an day extra (probably staying in Cochem to do some touristy stuff and maybe a ride out), I'll be going solo. I'm not that keen on group riding unless you've ridden with the other person, you need to have similar pace/riding styles for a week long trip I think.

I'd be happy to share my tyre2travel itinary file though, I'm in the process of splitting it into days and it probably needs some touching up as I planned it a few months ago.
I'm considering a Euro trip later this year, but chances are I'll only have a week. How did your route work out? Recommendations?

The awesome Crossgates to Newtown is now "mostly a 50 limit' now?? confused

Deary me, glad I haven't been for a few years - 50 limits have exactly the opposite desired effect on me as I adopt the 'might has well be hung for a sheep as a lamb' approach.

Same here. I'm tired of it.
There's a 60 nsl road near me that has had a section reduced to 40, I probably saw 100 odd on it before. Now it's a 40 I've been through at 120 odd they've cheesed me off so much.

I always enjoy going on my own. I get up each day, go where I want, and stop where I fancy.

I tend to end up in Monaco at some point, and do a few of the major alpin passes, but there's a real freedom to travelling like this.

Rether than speaking English, to the same people each night, you get to speak French, Spanish, Italian or German instead, with locals.

Afraid so. Of course, one can always pick one's moments for "exuberance"...

It was excellent thumbup I went last summer, did 1200 miles in total, the roads around Boullion and Esch-Sur-Sure are very good, and pretty much empty, and the Moselle Valley is very nice, I had rain the first day but the Moselle valley has it's own microclimate, was great weather from day 2 onwards. Stopped off at the Nordschleife and Spa on the way back too.

I did a video, shows some of the roads at least.

Here's my myrouteapp routes for the 4 days (the etra day i went exploring around Cochem and did an Autobahn top speed run biggrin)

Day 1 - https://www.myrouteapp.com/en/social/route/514017?...
Day 2 - https://www.myrouteapp.com/en/social/route/514027?...
Day 3 - https://www.myrouteapp.com/en/social/route/514028?...
Day 4 - https://www.myrouteapp.com/en/social/route/514029?...

Go to Cochem, there's plenty there for a look around at some touristy stuff, lovely town.

if you need campsite reccomendations I can share, the 3 I went to were very good (although the last one in the Eifel mountains was a bit of a ghost town!).

thanks Tall_Paul, really helpful info. Was hoping you'd have maps to share thumbup

I'm going to start planning.
