Rider training Mock 2 test the other day, ambulance coming behind us in a 40 no oncoming traffic, instructor says move over and slow down, would of done it anyway, down to 35 instructor yells slow down.
I’m 61 had a licence since 17.
Not sure I did anything wrong, upset me anyway.
I suspect he saw you doing wrong by only slowing down by ~10%. I’m 61 had a licence since 17.

The sooner the ambulance pisses off into the distance, you the safer you are.
Having your car licence since 17 doesn't really come into it too much considering how much safer you are with a metal cage around you.
Your instructor doesn't want to see you killed, so you can't exactly blame them if it seems they are being overly cautious, don't take it personal

Good luck on the real Mod 2

When you are in a test you need to exaggerate some things to show you know. The instructor would not have seen the subtle change in speed - they needed to see 40 down to 20 which is what you probably needed to do anyway. An ambulance doesn’t have much acceleration.I’m 61 had a licence since 17.

The instructor also has to keep the novice rider alive and in some ways needs to help the ambulance if you cannot.
I think they instructor did the right thing but nobody likes to make a mistake and get shouted at.
Once you pass the test you can ride the way you want to ride, at the moment it’s about how to pass.
When I was learning I found that I could roll off the throttle in to lower speed zones and let engine braking do the work but the instructor said to gently press the brake to show the examiner an exaggerated process that they could see a deliberate slowing in to the new speed limit.

I’m not sure what I would have done here. Probably hazard lights to make me more visible, pull over safely to a stop. And constant shoulder check to see the position of the ambulance until it passes?
Can anyone with the right answer advise!
I put the left indicator on and move over to the left and slow right down. Don't know if that is right though. Can anyone with the right answer advise!
Congrats on passing!
While I don’t do figures of eight on the road (or on track!), I do u-turns routinely. Perhaps it’s my poor sense of direction![smile](/inc/images/smile.gif)

not sure I've done many or any slow speed manoeuvres since passing and have defo not done a u turn or a figure of 8!
Are you sure? What about slow speed skills when filtering? While I don’t do figures of eight on the road (or on track!), I do u-turns routinely. Perhaps it’s my poor sense of direction

No one likes being shouted out, especially when there's no need for it.I’m 61 had a licence since 17.

In that scenario you simply slow down and/or pull over to a stop when safe to do so. No drama.
Don't let it knock you and remember you'll have passed soon, free to ride without some bullying t

I was reading this thread last night as my mod 1 was due this morning and had an incredible amount of nerves. Woke up this morning feeling as if I didn't want to go, wondering why I am even bothering to do all this.
Rode to the test center while I new instructor just nit picked at the tiniest of details on both of us that were with him, anyway went through with the test and blitz it with no minors.
Couldn't be happier now and excited now that the end is in sight. Also its the first time I have had a lesson/ride without pissing down with rain which made it all the nicer.
Good luck to everyone else and don't get too down beat!

“Train hard, fight easy” approach eh ?!

Most of my lessons seemed to be in the rain, Sod’s Law I figured

Yup, I have tried to dedicate quite some time to slow manoeuvring as it really helps with confidence and on road skill requirements but I think there was a huge element of overthinking everything which was interfering with what was natural to me. Anyway all done and a lovely ride back to the school with a weight off my shoulder.
Well done on the Mod 1. It's much easier to see the end and the Mod 2 really is simple. Ride safe, remember all your observations and don't fall off is about all you need to do. Ask your instructor about "angled starts" if you don't know already. Mine told me they trip a few people up.
I was joining a 50mph dual carriageway on my Mod 2, slip road was down hill and not a very long length of road to allow you to merge. To get into the safest gap I had the bike up to 63 ish, thought I’d failed when I saw that.
Examiner didn’t mention it on the debrief. When I bought it up, after he’d confirmed I’d passed, he said it was done safely and I dropped the speed as soon as safe to do so once integrated into the traffic so he wasn’t worried.
Both the Mod 1 and Mod 2 examiners were really nice blokes, very good at calming my nerves and very reasonable and positive the whole way through. One also did car tests.

Examiner dependent surely, but there does seem to be a bit more lee-way in terms of just getting stuff done.
The de-brief after mine he more or less reeled off "You should've overtaken here", "pinned it there", "blast by the bus here" etc.
We got stuck in some stupid temporary lights for easily 15 minutes, even though he had me follow him and filter to the front.
They finally went green, he went through, only for them to immediately go red. "f
k IT MATE JUMP THE LIGHT f
k WAITING IN THAT AGAIN".

Congrats on your Mod 1 pass.
On my Mod 2, I had to join a dual carriageway and absolutely pinned it down the slip road. Shift lights flashing job. Checked mirrors and examiner right behind doing the same. They love a bit of progress,

You were making progress and altering your speed to suit the traffic in a safe manner. They'll have loved that.Examiner didn’t mention it on the debrief. I use these for my lessons and tests, it’s just a lovely thing to ride, all be it I’m sure everything feels nicer than a 125cc.

That's pretty much what I was after, I learnt on an SV650 and did my Mod 1/2 tests on it. I did look at them but this MT stood out more. Definitely didn't enjoy riding a 125 thoughIt feels like such a playful and easy to handle bike.
