You should have kept the middle section the same colour as the tank and just got protectors to cover the dent in the tank.
Would have saved a lot of hassle.
I presume you are putting clear coat over the top of it?
I have, silver/grey for the centre, blue for the green bits. Would have saved a lot of hassle.

Don't underestimate how long it takes to sand all the fairings. I stupidly thought I'd do mine as I like doing as much as possible myself on the bike. Took me over a week to do 2 sets and made me wish I'd just paid the painters a little bit more to do it.
Should look good though. Are you doing the wheels in silver to match?
He won't need to spend near that time on a rattle can job. Especially on a track bike.Should look good though. Are you doing the wheels in silver to match?
MTB don't forget what I said about the cold. Your paint and surfaces need to be warm. Stick the paint tins in a bucket or hot water to warm up.

Why does it matter if it's a track bike or not? I'd expect the same finish on both a road or a track bike. I wouldn't put near the time into a track bike. Sooner or later it will end up on its side and the better the job, the more money and time he's pissed away and the more heartbroken he'll be when trying to get it half decent again.

Well firstly it's a rattle can job in a shed. He can do fantastic prep, but he's still limited by the tools at his disposal.

I'm sure with plenty of time and effort even a rattle can job can be made to look alright. I wouldn't put near the time into a track bike. I can understand what you're saying when you don't see the point in putting all the time in if it's highly likely it will get crashed, I just always have been a believer in if a job is worth doing, it's worth doing well.
Plus just get 2 sets of fairings then it doesn't matter if you crash! Or get colour co-ordinated duct tape!
As Prof said warm the cans. Don't shove them in the fire though
You have picked the wrong time of year to do it really. Do your best to do it in a warm as you can place with as little damp as possible. Wouldn't be a bad idea to stick the parts in front of a heater to dry.
Prep it well that's the pain in the backside bit, and lots of thin layers is your way forward.
If your doing more than 1 colour on a panel mask the edge really well as masking take can bleed and it will look a right dogs backside if it does.

A tip if you are masking colour to colour, buy some Tamiya model masking tape. You should be able to get it from ebay in different widths, max is 10mm if I remember right. Just use that for the edge and use the cheap ste onto that. It gives a good, sharp edge.
Also, peel it whilst the paint is wet and back onto itself, slightly in the direction of the mask.

I think with your picture you've proven it can but to be fair it's a st load harder, and you need a good eye to get it even. What's the phrase? 80% for 20%, meaning it takes 80% of the total effort for a job to make it that final 20% better? I admire your attitude however. I did some wings on my XJR some years ago and it actually looked bang on, but it took forever. I also did them inside the house. Which I realise with the power of hindsight, and a bill for professional cleaning equipment, was one of the worst ideas I've ever had. To this day I also worry about lung cancer from breathing in lacquer.
There's also the fact I'm unsure of MTBs prowess with a rattle can and budget paint. It should be fun though. I do enjoy his stories.

I know for £20 its not going to look great, but it will look a hell of a lot better than it does just now. It only has to look ok in a photo from a distance whilst traveling at speed.
Id wait until the summer to do it correctly if I cared, now wait id pay a pro. But I don't.
The fairings cost £60. They have the worlds worst rattle job just now.
Well today I started painting them. The recommended sanding paper done nothing as the existing paint is soooo thick. So I gave them a quick wash down with some baby wipes and away I went.
I have latterlyspared incurred no expense.
I decided to warm the tins up seeing as its zero degrees outside. I put them in a basin of hot water from the kettle to warm them up. I fking shat it as one exploded 5 minutes after being put in.
So I done the seat on my door step, after covering a section of my front door pavement in some blue paint (luckily I quickly washed it and its gone, good paint this stuff) and realising I have a white door and neighbours I thought it best to do it elsewhere. It really wasn't working, the wind kept blowing the newspaper into the paint as well.
So I decided to go walk to my local woods, for a spot of painting.
who needs a dust sheet, just use some leaves.....it will disappear quite quickly anyway, probably.
so first coat done, I brought them inside to dry. I have to say, I'm afraid to spark a match to be honest, its rather pongy in here. I have a feeling the other half is going to go mental when she gets in.
looks fking awesome I know.
