I converted my 10 year old mongoose MTB to an E-Bike. Replaced the rear wheel with an electric motor. If you de-restrict it, it will easily do 35mph on the throttle, or you can restrict it to 16mph. Disclaimer - Legally, it can only be used on private land, with permission.

At the moment when I’ve got my orthotic trainers on, my legs are the same(ish) lengths, so odd cranks would be a bit pointless at the moment, but it’s worth thinking about when the orthopaedic surgeon finally finishes what she’s doing, if there’s any remaining discrepancy.

These are the trainers in question. You can see one looks a bit “Spice Girls” with the extra sole piece. There’s a further 12mm inside on the insole, which is the maximum they can do (otherwise you can’t get your foot in and lace it up).

Has there really been no update since June? Surely that can't be right?

Just discovered this thread, it seems very similar to me. Riding home from work, I got taken SMIDSY'd on my MZ250. Your description of seeing your leg with a new bend sent shudders.

I was 21 (now 56) and had comminuted fracture of L femur. Multiple fractures in ankle and foot too. My femur also took ages to heal: I was in traction for some months making v little progress, eventually I got a bone graft and external fixator and the got me up. That seemed to do the trick. I was left with about 20mm shortened femur and limited knee mobility. I also started out getting orthotic showed but gave up on that due to hassle and the sole always came off as it had no flex. I started on a pushbike, started with 155mm LH crank and 170 RH. It helped and cycling became my thing. I now use a stick often but apart from that I've had very little to complain about in the years since. I hope you recover as well or better than I've done.

I've been browsing motorbikes again for about a year or so : the main thing putting me off is that it'd mean I'd cycle less. Trying to work out if I'm bothered by that.

edited to add, I read through the thread now, and wow ! Our experiences were only really similar in the first 9 months or so. Youve had a tough time yet your attitude has been great.

Hi everyone.

Thanks for the requests for an update/well wishes. Unfortunately, there isn’t an update I’m still waiting for the next lot of surgery, delayed since June 2020 because of Covid. I’m still making a nuisance of myself with the consultant’s secretary by ringing them every four weeks or so.

I’m back at work full time, on almost full shifts (I’m working the full hours, but no lates just yet). I’m not allowed out without a grown up, because I can’t do the fitness test, so consequently can’t do officer safety training, which means I’m not licensed to carry my incapacitant spray/baton/cuffs etc.

The nick I’m at has been refurbished and there is a gym going in (paid for by subscription, we don’t get it free). It’ll have free weights, some weights machines, rowers and treadmills, so I can potentially do my fitness test on the treadmill, rather than the shuttle run. There’s no way I can run and the turns at either end are impossible. Apparently the treadmill test is physically harder, as it’s 10 minutes at 6kmh, whereas the shuttle run starts at level 2 (a brisk walk) and I only have to get to level 5.4, so just over three minutes of light jogging.

The difficulty with the treadmill is that the gradient increases by 3% every 2 minutes, starting from flat, so by the end of the ten minutes, the gradient is pretty steep at 15%. The sped doesn’t increase, just the gradient.

Have you tried a fast walk yet?

I’ll be honest, it’s bloody frustrating, but unfortunately there’s little I can do to change things. When I do eventually get the next surgery/do some physio, I can at least influence things a bit.

Cheers. I’m still restricted duties at work, basically no risk contact, so I can’t even interview in the cells if the suspect has markers for violence, even historic ones and they’ve been fine in custody this time round. It’s understandable from work’s point of view/risk assessment, but frustrating at the same time.

Are you on Facebook? If so there is a great group called Bleep Kind. Offers support for the bleep test and also for the treadmill test and bike test.

If you aren’t on Facebook it’s worth joining just for that group! Some very helpful members on there and a lot of fitness trainers from various forces.
