Can't believe it's coming up on 5 years, wow. You sound like you're still in good spirits though.

I had a call from a withheld number last Tuesday, which I usually ignore, but for some reason I answered.

It was the orthopaedic clinic, ringing about my appointment. When I heard that, I was dreading the appointment being can Elle’s or postponed, but they wanted to know if I could come in a week earlier. Luckily I sit next to my line manager, so he gave me th ok and I met the new consultant on Friday for the first time.

Except he’s not new, he initially set up the limb reconstruction unit in the 90s and is a well-published expert in his field and has lectured worldwide about orthopaedic trauma and limb reconstruction. He is, it seems, “the man”.

I just need a preoperative assessment and then the surgery cycle should start end of May/beginning of June. I’ll be sporting a frame for another 6-9 months but by the end of that I should have a straighter, longer femur and a better aligned foot.

Excellent news Dibble, having lived with the frame previously at least you know what to expect.

Yep. And the maximum projected time [i]frame [/](ho ho ho) is half the previous length of time I was sporting it, so it should positively fly by! I liken it to flying to the US now I’ve flown to Australia. Still a long time, but nowhere as bad as it might be.

Thanks all.

The consultant is happy he can improve me from where I am at the moment, but he’s realistic that I’ll never get back to pre accident strength/mobility/use (as am I). I could cope without more surgery if I really had to, but everything is still a bit if a faff, and there’s some stuff I can’t manage, that I’ll be able to when the next round is done (assuming it all goes to plan). I’ll be able to wear normal shoes and walk further with less pain, so I think it’s worth the 6-9 months of grief it’ll take to improve it (and I know what I’m in for having been through a fair bit of it already.

Obviously someone, somewhere is having a laugh at my expense. I had my pre op assessment about ten days ago, on a Friday. Everything was ok, blood pressure’s a bit high (it always has been), weights a bit high (see above) and blood oxygen is only about 95-96, so a bit low (see above, again).

Did I mention the pre op assessment was on a Friday? Yep, Friday the thirteenth, of course.

Today, this:

I have to re contact the hospital at least two weeks after I test negative so they can schedule my surgery…

I started sneezing a couple of days ago, but I usually get hay fever this time of year, so didn’t put two and two together. I had a full on sneezing fit when I took the dog for a walk yesterday morning but the field I was at had freshly mown grass everywhere, so that just made me even more convinced it was hay fever.

I woke up this morning feeling a bit grim so did a test after I’d walked the dog, result above… I just feel like I’ve got a heavy cold, although I have been feeling exhausted the last week or so, but just put that down to several stupidly long (16 hours plus) back to back, busy days at work last week. I still have my sense of smell, although some people would say it’s debatable I’ve ever had any taste at all. I feel a bit “bleurgh” and a little breathless but not like I’m at death’s door, thankfully. I’m guessing the vaccines and booster have probably reduced the effects.

So it’s another couple of weeks delay, but compared to some people who’ve really suffered with Covid, it’s not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. The annoying thing is that apart from work, I’ve been keeping away from people to try and avoid picking any infections up…

That’s a bh. Trying to be half glass full it should mean you don’t get it during the recovery period once you have the op. I had Covid a few weeks back. Was pretty unpleasant for a few days. I wouldn’t have wanted to be suffering that post surgery.

Very disappointing. Sorry to hear it.

You have an amazing ability to deal with the toughest challenges and I am sure you will deal with this in your usual way. All the best for a quick reschedule,.

Well, the good news is that the coofid didn’t kill me. It’s buggered up my sense of smell and taste though (some people would say my sense of taste has always been questionable)…

I had a letter a few weeks back from the hospital telling me I had to go for an echocardiogram (basically a heart ultrasound), which was last Friday. I’ve not heard anything back yet, but hoping I get a surgery date in the next couple of weeks. I did get a phone call about three weeks ago on a Wednesday, offering me a date the next Saturday, but when I mentioned the echocardiogram they said they’d have to wait for the results of that.

So I’m manically trying to decorate the house I’ve bought and get moved in within the next fortnight. Of course, I fell off the ladder on Saturday while papering a ceiling and went right over on my duff ankle, then did the same today! I’m now hobbling round and trying to ice it as much as possible, before heading back tomorrow for more DIY. Of course, as it’s an old house, everything takes three times longer. I’m currently 8 days in to my plotted two days of wallpapering!

Also, I’m glad I don’t need a mammogram (even with my man boobs). Just having the transducer pressed on my moobs was painful enough! The technician wouldn’t be drawn in the result or timescales, other than to say the images would be with the pre op team that day.
