I quite like the old airheads. The engine's ugly as sin but there somethign about them. A mate's got an R80GS and absolutely loves it.

They were well built with (mostly) good quality components. There are some issues with them but those are well known and have alternative part/work around options cheaply and easily available.

They are comfortable and practical and can keep up with modern traffic. They also have a very unique character. An appreciating classic that isn’t too much work to look after and is still usable as an every day bike. What more could you want?

The R80GS is possibly the best "around the world" bike you could get!

Hehe, rode mine into work today. I cannot imagine ever loving another bike as much after this which will make it so hard to choose a new bike in 4 years time (I can see me keeping this forever) !!!!

I like them, a lot, but not lusting after one at all
+1

Except for the liking them bit.
There's a lot of bikes I like a lot and that's why I don't lust after it. It's a technical marvel in its own right but to me that doesn't make me passionate about the prospect owning one (not that I could afford one!!!)
yes Same here. I wouldn't mind riding or even owning one, but I'm not lusting after one like I would with the Panigale, or even the CBR's posted in this thread.

Oh, btw:

Agreed - it just seems to have and do everything that I want from a bike. I just need someone to cut the price in half so I can afford one!

Having seen pictures of the engine, I can't wait to see the rest of the bike.

What other pearls of wisdom can you pass on?

How does it compare with your bikes?

Very comfortable riding position (a'la the RT). Not much wind protection so high miles probably limited. Engine willing and boisterous up top. Some big power and perky character smile

Great fun bike and due to upright riding position and slim waist, would be a good commuter smile

Nowhere near the fizz of the S1000, though thumbup

More or less 'usable', though?
