Watching BSB at the moment and it got me thinking....

How much would you guess a top six (I'd guess some/most will pay for rides through sponsorship etc) BSB rider "earn" per season, be it paid directly from the team, team sponsor or personal sponsor?

How much "work" will they do? Obviously every race weekend, but what would you expect, turn up at the circuit on Thursday, leave on a Sunday evening? Outside of this what else, testing? Sponsor bits and bobs?

Quick google search would suggest circa 30-40k up to £120k.

It's not as much as you may think. In the late 90s the triumph triple racing had brilliant grids with top name riders in it. I remember Michael Ritter telling me he got more prize money for winning the speed triple race than he did for a first and second in the two bbs races! Iirc a win on the triumph was 1500 quid or 2k.

So you'd think with low prize money head be high salaried, but the reality was the too guys warned about 50k wages for a bsb ride. A few years ago, but compared to footballers on more than that a week......

Give that there are very few 'paid' riders in Moto2 I'd imagine there'd be even less in BSB. I wouldn't be surprised if it was only Shakey who was actually being paid a salary from the team, with everyone else carrying out an actual job on the side or picking up personal sponsorship.

SO what would you be expecting a top six rider in BSB rider to pocket for a seasons racing, 50-70k?

Will they work much in the off season once the next years ride is secured? Chasing sponsorship etc?

Would you expect some of them to have additional jobs?

Lol that's probably for the better as I literally have zero track talent on a motorbike, whatsoever.

An article in this weeks MCN, ever reliable, quotes Chris Walker "...riders like Shakey on £2k a week..."

Chris says he earns his crust now from his MX track and his race school at Mallory. I guess he'll be looking for a new track for that though.

I've spoken to a few BSB riders over the past few years.

One was being asked to pay £70,000 for a ride.

One is currently getting podiums and was earning £0 for his BSB ride

One is in the showdown and does trackday tuition to make ends meet.

The money isn't great in any form of motorsport, unless you really are at the top of the tree.

I was wondering this today - especially about a racer like Rutter. How much would he earn for the BSB season given that he isn't with a strong team. How much would Rutter earn over a year from BSB and then how much would he earn for all his racing like IOM, Macau etc.

I got talking to a rider a few of years back (07/08) and was shocked by how much money there is, or is not in BSB,
Riders seemed to be turning up to pay for rides, when all they were doing was paying for a big ass hospitality unit.

Haga last year was paid by MSV, and Hopper the year before was part funded.
Paul Bird has a few riders in his stable, Shakey, Ellison is still sponsored by him, Stuart Easton, Not sure if Sykes is too.
Out of the shootout guys I would say 3 get a wage, as to how much I dont know, Bridewell has a good financial backing.

It seems the prize money is in Road Racing, but sounds like that has dropped a fair whack.

There must be money in it though, because there are some lovely Motorhomes in the paddock, you dont buy them on 7.50 an hour during the week wink

I wouldn't take that as a sign of riders wages..... I'm fortunate enough to be able to park my modest motorhome in the riders paddock at Oulton.... 90% of the riders are in beat up old caravans, the back of a van or in some cases a tent....

Last year I was parked next to Alisair Seeley's MH, mine was bigger and newerhehe..... Mine is an 05 Swift, so not much in common with a 100k Winnebagohehe

When I done the Ron Haslam school last year, Tristan Palmer was my instructor (really nice bloke). He said he was fortunate enough to earn enough from riding bikes, superstock 1000s at the time. Although I didn't ask him a figure, I guess it's a fair enough salary.

I've always wondered how many top riders would ride without getting paid, just for the love of the sport.

Dont get me wrong, nowt wrong with kipping in the back of an old post office van, but these motorhomes need paying for, and I cant see BSB wages paying it myself.

Tris is sound as a pound,
Does he still have a shout in a bike shop? Nuneaton way I think?

This sentence is highly unlikely.

Bridewell has a good financial backing.
This sentence is absolute nonsense.
