Old songs (part of) being used in TV ads
Discussion
Nothing new, it might just be me, but more tv ads today use part of 'old' rock or pop songs.
I can only assume permission must be sought?
This one has had and gets a lot of play late on in the day, the 30 seconds Sky Vegas ad.
'This is Michael, this morning he was doing his recycling...'
It has an overpowering emphasis on modern rock, yet uses a 'really old' rock song.
The last few seconds you hear a few words of the song.
If you're old enough you'll recognise the group who took the 67 song and released it in 1969.

I'm not sure which one it is, but there's an ad running at the moment that uses a tune that was first played exactly 200 years ago:
Rossini's Largo al Factotum
That ^ BTW is the best version I've heard

Ford using Hawkwind's Master Of The Universe; never seemed right; not because of the song, which is great, but using it in an ad for such a dull car; the song deserved better.

I agree but what I'm getting at is with these very short clips of old music/songs, I assume somebody is getting royalties? I would hope! Some of the groups are still going, albeit well reconstituted! But if a group is dead and gone? It's almost as if it's 'let's sneak this riff, these bars, this bit in - who'll know?' http://youtu.be/l274PJTsejU
I'm sure it doesn't happen like that, but...

Us composer types get royalties up until our death, and then our estate gets them for 70 years.I'm sure it doesn't happen like that, but...

Last year, Iceland (I think) where using Gassenhauer by Carl Orff, which itself is a "cover version" of a much older (16th Century) tune. Rossini's Largo al Factotum
Barclaycard up to it now.
40 years on since release (come this Sept). Still sounds good though! I think everyone at one time had the album of the same name.

Some of the firms and ad agencies must take their brains out though.
I've never been a fan of any Lloyds Bank advertising, but their latest uses "Mad World". I don't know about anyone else but the obvious image that conjures is if "Donny Darko". So apart from telling me that their bank is mad, most of it is some strange fiction with six foot rabbits..... Yeah, I'll have some of that, please.....

Ha ha. Like that too.Funny, with beer ads. Watching one of the Jason Bourne films on ITV last night (Ultimatum)- the only films I can watch twice or more!
Asides, bloody ads intervene ...until a 30 sec Heineken ad comes on with Oscar actor Benicio Del Toro.
Interest is immediate (for obvious reasons ), and then the relevant part for this thread, the song/music...
Goo Goo Barabajagel, the old 1969 Donovan hit, which featured Jeff Beck, Madeleine Bell (Blue Mink fame) and Ronnie Wood (Stones).
Thought I'd link a YouTube of the ad/song, but hey ho, not much chance. All seemingly taken down with a SME (Sony) content ban.
Must be one somewhere abroad. Yep.
