Sat Nav SD Card Theft

Apparently this is now a thing.

A guy at work had his Nissan X-trail passenger side window smashed in a Metrolink park and ride car park, and all they took was the SD card for his built-in sat nav. They left his expensive sunglasses and everything else.

The scrotes also did about 5 other Nissans at the same time.

The police told them there is a market for the cards - I'm not sure if this is the case for other manufacturers. I have a newish VW with an SD card.

Taking the SD card with you is not going to stop them smashing your window to find out it isn't there.

I suppose if dealers are charging a fortune for the updates and make it impossible to just copy to an aftermarket card there would be a black market for them.

When the data used to be on a DVD somewhere buried in the boot it wouldn't have been realistic to steal it quickly but when you can pop out an SD card in seconds it is.

It might be a good time to look at upgrading his locks and alarm.

SEAT is coded to the car. I tried the whole 'free update' thing but it didn't work, literally cloned the SD card and it recognised it, but adding the newer maps is something a dealer wants £110+VAT for - which is a joke quite honestly!

Yeah - it didn't work for me on my Passat either - the sat nav is pants anyway compared to google or apple maps.
