Quite literally, what could possibly be going on here? 2015 899 is on 14,220 miles today and while rolling along in 2nd gear, when I came off the throttle I felt a few fairly violent judders. My legs felt like the engine was trying to jump forward. I tried to replicate it and it did it again. I went out for a ride just now to see if it was still there, and sure enough in 2nd and 3rd gear while doing reasonable speeds, when I came off the throttle it juddered quite violently multiple times.

I’ll stick it in for servicing tomorrow, but wondered if anyone else had experienced this.

Check chain, sprockets and sprocket carrier.
Next check the clutch and basket

Bloody hell.. could have been reasonably unpleasant event.

Cheers for the advice, spot on. Chain was laying ON the exhaust and sprockets we’re looking a state.

That looks a bit slack.

This is why chain maintenance is so important. Looks like you might have at least one kinked link in that chain.

At least one! Chain is knackered. Honestly glad to be laughing about it, could have been a complete disaster.

My guys always stress having the chain lubed and checked every 500 miles. Bike has been sitting in the garage and used infrequently for the last 3-400 miles so paid it no mind. Huge mistake! Lesson learned.

Wow - that’s one very loose chain!!

Always just give it a quick check with your foot before you move off, takes merely a few seconds.

Certainly could have been, a chain that loose could have jumped off the sprocket and locked your rear wheel. The rust actually suggested to me it had been out on the salty roads! Am struggling to keep the rust at bay on the chain of my commuter.

Are your adjuster blocks even the right way round?

Seriously you either need to YouTube some bike maintenance tips or get a new mechanic or garage as that chain is truly shocking.

Wow!!!
I've got an 899 and even 6000 hard miles round Europe didn't leave the chain anywhere near as stretched as that. It looks like the last adjustment was the pre-delivery inspection.

im guessing the lack of lube has really taken its toll on the sprockets thus causing the excessive slack, the chain could never wear enough to cause that amount of slack surely?

I just ride the thing and take it in for scheduled servicing. The bike is in LA so never ever sees a drop of rain. Not sure how it could have gotten into this state.

Will be a lot more vigilant after this.

Better hope it doesn't use any oil then

Out of interest when was it’s last service then?

Not sure what chains Ducati use but I have seen another 899 chain in a dreadful state after literally 1000miles.

Bike is on 14.3k as of today. Last scheduled service was at 7.5k but has had two set of tyres since (nails) since. At around 12.8k it had its brake fluid and oil done followed by a recommended new chain/lube at 13k-ish IIRC.

Did you have the chain done at 13k or was it just recommended and was never changed?

I think it’s got the wrong length chain, the picture doesn’t show the full extent of just how loose it is as the exhaust is actually holding it up.

That’s never purely chain stretch to get that slack
Sure the wheel hasn’t moved or front sprocket ?
