Engine cutting out.
Discussion
Went out for a quick run today. Once the engine was warmed up everytime I came to a halt at junctions/lights ect the engine would die. This would happen as the revs fell below 1200 and would just die. Re starting was/is not a problem and would re start on the button but I would have to keep the revs up when standstill to save it dying again. The car is a 4.0 only mods being de catt and clive y piece and an ACT induction kit. All leads, plugs dizzy cap have been replaced a few miles ago and the air filter is clean. Once the engine is cool tick over at idle is fine and does not cut out. Any ideas what could cause this?
I used to get this a lot. You drive a number of miles, warm engine, come to a junction and it stalls. It is the stepper not movng quickly enough to stop the stall. If you catch the revs and hold it at 1000 rpm for a few seconds you should find you can lift your foot off the throttle after a few seconds.
That's the cause I believe. What's the fix?
Mine was doing it last night after I stalled it by bad clutch management. I confused the ECU it would seem. Cured itself after I stopped at the shops for 10 minutes.

I haven't had the problem since I had the stepper changed last year for a different reason - my old one went faulty when hot. After I had the car decatted and the Clive Y inserted the problem was so bad it was stalling on leisurely gear changes. Rob checked all the settings, then said to himself "it MUST be the stepper", swapped in a spare one and the problem was solved.
Last night my seat was one stop too far back, I started the car and let the clutch in too fast, and stalled it. Two goes to restart it, and the ECU was confused. It stalled a couple more times, so I held it on the throttle until it untwisted the ECU's knickers a bit and held its own idle. After that it tried to stall another couple of times, but after 15 miles it was all working 100%.
So if it persists, first thing to do is take the stepper apart and clean it. And if you and your TVR guy cannot solve it, try changing the stepper.
That is what I think - anyone know better?

Had a good look in the engine bay, checked leads/connections all was good. The car was running smelly and a little off to be honest but nothing major. What I did notice was a loose Lambda sensor in the near side manifold. This was loose by about half a turn. It appears someone had tried to tighten it in the past with a pair of mole grips as you can see the marks and it is now an oval shape. I finger tightened it back up....I have not got the tool to tighten fully, then took it out for another run. The difference is night and day. Its not smelly....well not AS smelly, and tick over is now smooth rather than lumpy. So what i'm thinking is this....... The Lambda worked loose and tick over became sluggish, on slowing down this had cut the revs. Also on pulling away at junctions I was having to give it some on the throttle to save it stalling....If I didnt it would stall and therefore thinking it was my 'clutch management'. Since tightening the Lambda pulling away is now a dream with no over revving required. Up to now no more cutting out . Soooo loose Lambda appears to have been the source of the problem escalating to stalling issues with clutch management which in turn has given the problem QBee has originally mentioned. So now need to find something to tighten the loose Lambda once and for all hoping that it aint damaged.

.......And funilly enough as my clutch is on its way out and due replacement on Tuesday I also happen to do a bit of 'clutch bad management' by stalling the car on each occeaasion this dying engine scinario has happened. Looks like your on to something !
Mine went for a clutch today. (Been slipping for about a week under anything more than a throttle tickle.)Just as I got to the trading estate where I was taking it, pedal went floppy, completely failed. Had to push it the last 200 yards. Couldn't even start it in gear, wouldn't take up drive at all. Bless Top Gear automotive for helping me push it!
Warning to anyone out there, if pedal is very, very stiff and the bite point right at the top, you've about 100 miles left in it. That's all I got anyway.
