I can't help you but the Malaysian one is the best looking by far!

Are you thinking of building one?
Would be nice ... have you ever seen your Chim without all the folding down sh*t bolted to the back? It looks lovely! I had mine off to replace the rear fabric and sooooo wanted to leave it off completely!Steve-Edwards said:
Hi Folks,
Sorry to drag up an old thread but I've come across a few pictures on here of the 'Malaysian Style' hardtop for the Chimaera and wondered if anyone had any more images from any new angles. I'm curious to see more of it.
Also, I've seen mention of others thinking of building one themselves, anyone had any luck with it or got a currently ongoing project?
Cheers guy's
Steve.

Just curious at this stage, but I like a challenge!I thinks it's do-able as a two-piece jobby, but there would be a few refinements needed to turn something that was designed for racing into a weatherproof road version - the obvious one being the lack of any rear support for the lower edge of the screen, but the outer shape of this hardtop looks great on the Chimaera and suits the car well.
I read another hardtop thread earlier which has been locked, but within the discussion there was a lot of uncertainty about how the Malaysian hardtop would attach to the car.
If it could be made to attach in the same was as my existing hardtop arrangement then that's half the battle over.
One point worth noting is that the top of the rear screen seems quite high - encroaching into the area usually occupied by the internal header, so maybe the top of the screen would need bringing rearwards an inch or two, just enough to allow an internal support to be bonded in underneath and allow the struts to still be used, but I don't think a slightly lower screen height would be noticeable or detract from the look.
I have an old prototype hardtop outer skin lying around in my workshop which was only going to get chopped up and chucked away, but it would make a good donor/guinea pig to test out the Malaysian shape if I get time.
The important bits such as the rear deck shape and header profile where it meets the targa panel are all bang on so the end result would be a two-piece item that would fit the rear deck, and match up to the centre targa panel in the usual way.
The targa would need the contour adding above the windows that flows down into the rear pillar, but again do-able.
It'll be a job for over the winter months if anything, If I get the odd quiet afternoon inbetween customer jobs.

I always thought this is much the most practical way to do it, retaining the ability to store in the boot would make it a usable daily proposition.Something like a full width rubber door seal applied to the under-edge should provide protection against the elements and protect paintwork.
I would have thought some method of hooking into the back of the cabin interior, with rotating cam devices locking onto the roof hoop pivots to tighten the whole thing down onto the car should do it...

must be longer than the current one to make it look good. similar to that one
Think moving much further backwards would prevent the boot from opening. Edited by domV8 on Friday 4th September 09:58
